Today we’d like to introduce you to Kammy Burnett.
Hi Kammy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m a third-generation Los Angeles-born native. I graduated from Pepperdine with a B.A. in telecommunication and started working at Fox 11 News in LA as a production assistant. I also wrote for the morning show and Good Day LA. In 2007, I decided to pursue acting. I had small parts in movies and TV shows. I did marry and have four children, so most of my focus was raising them.
I’ve always enjoyed making people laugh. A few years ago, I decided to take a comedy writing workshop because I wanted to know why people laughed at things that I would say. I also went on to take a stand-up comedy workshop, both with the amazing Jonathan Solomon. Our graduation class was at the Laugh Factory, where we all performed a six-minute standup routine. My very first time was a success.
When the pandemic hit, I started making short comedy and impression videos for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. I think comedy was a form of therapy to get me through what was happening during that time.
Just last year, I co-wrote and co-starred in my first dark comedy short. I then produced a short film for a good friend of mine. I just completed another comedy short that I co-wrote and co-starred in with another friend.
I recently began writing comedy material and have since performed at open mics around the Los Angeles area. I wish I had started doing standup sooner. I do believe that it doesn’t matter when you start as long as you start. There’s also no age limit to doing comedy. You can be 100 years old with a big following.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggle is very real. There will always be distractions. Whether they be work-related, family-related, or health-related. I have four kids and two of them had health issues so my focus was on them when they were young. I’m now an empty-nester, and things are easier for me these days.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an actor, comedian, and filmmaker. I guess I can say people know me as being funny and entertaining. Since I was a kid, I’ve always enjoyed impersonating people. I’ve done Nancy Pelosi, Caitlyn Jenner, and Kamala Harris impressions, and others. I think my impressions and my ability to make people laugh is what sets me apart from others. I am very proud of them because it’s a talent I do possess. I think I need to get back to doing them more often.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I think success means different things to different people. To some, it’s money. To others, it’s achieving a goal, whatever it may be. I think mine is achieving a goal and enjoying the present moments of that pursuit. There’s a saying I’ve heard, “do what you love and the money follows.”
