Rising Stars: Meet Michael Kalisky

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Kalisky.

Michael Kalisky

Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was started playing guitar when I was 10 because I broke my leg and I had to spend a lot of time by myself. I have studied music since then; when I was 18, I released my first album ‘The Voice of Peace’, which was made entirely in my room by myself; the name is a tribute to the Israeli humanitarian and peace activist “Abie Nathan”. During my time in the military, I recorded my second album, ‘Backwise,’ which is my first ‘live’ album. While I served the army, I was able to continue my studies at ‘Rimon School of music’ in their best course – ‘the jazz institute’.

After graduation, Rimon, I got a full scholarship to Berklee. Before I got to Berklee, I recorded my 3rd album, ‘Who Am I?’; that album tells the story of my emotional insights during my military service throughout the music.

This album will be available in all platforms this July! And a single coming up this June!

Nowadays, I’m a student at Berklee College of Music, and I’m looking forward to seeing what my future career will be.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There wasn’t a smooth road at all, At the beginning of my service, I was barely played.

I didn’t have time at all, and the work was busy. I don’t complain about anything; I think this time made me who I’m today,

But the fact that I didn’t have time for music made me a zombie. I felt there’s no reason to do what I do without it.

Later on, I talked to my commanders and explained them my situation, that in order to keep pushing my hard work in the military, I have to do music somehow. So, they let me get out early from the office for 2 days in a week.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do music. I play guitar and produce a bit.

In my opinion, my music is influenced by world music, I really like classical, jazz, rock, pop, Afro-beat, hip-hop, Latin music and so…

I’m trying to develop my own language by writing original music, improvising, and just being present.

I’m trying to tell a story, tell what I feel or think.

Usually, I do it instrumental, but lately, I began to write some lyrics, and in my new album, there will be some songs.

I do the music that I feel the most me at the moment, and as I evolve, I’m trying to make the music evolve as well.

How do you think about luck?
Honestly, I feel lucky to have the opportunities I have.

I think the path I took it’s for the best because otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to do what I did in Rimon And Berklee
