Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Friedland. They and their team shared their story with us below:
From his humble beginnings, hand painting greeting cards to over 30 years running his successful Los Angeles design atelier, Marc Friedland’s journey has been one of constant evolution and innovation. He went on to reimagine the modern invitation as a powerful art form and embarked on a quest to explore the profound impact of forging deeper personal connections—a theme that has become central to his career. Marc is a master storyteller, ideator, designer, and artist, blending these roles seamlessly to create not just luxury communications but also coveted products that embody individuality and social grace.
The ethos of excellence at Marc Friedland Couture Communications (MFCC) is epitomized by the exceptional team Marc has assembled—individuals and talents who share his unwavering commitment to client satisfaction. Together, they form a powerhouse capable of tackling any creative challenge and bringing Marc’s visions to life across diverse media and channels.
MFCC’s Los Angeles studio is a vibrant hub of creativity and experimentation where innovative processes and materials are continuously explored. With in-house printing and production, MFCC is a true makers studio. This environment fosters the creation of truly unique pieces that embody Marc’s passion for celebrating personal relationships. His vision inspires a revival of the art of personal handwritten correspondence, rekindling the joy of tangible connection.
Marc’s influence extends far beyond his creations. He authored “Invitations by Marc Friedland,” a definitive book on modern invitations, and has been featured in prestigious publications such as The Wall Street Journal, People, and InStyle. As the “stationer to the stars,” he has crafted luxury stationery for countless A-list celebrities, helping them commemorate life’s most cherished moments in true style.
Today, MFCC focuses on yet another of his studio’s innovations-guest experience design. Combining old-world social graces with a mix of 21st-century neurocognitive science, Marc has applied this unique approach to areas such as estate/yacht branding, with a portfolio of projects in hospitality, experiential activations, marketing materials, and milestone celebrations, continuing Marc’s legacy of innovation and creativity in luxury communications.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a creative at the same time as having the responsibility of managing a growing design studio has presented numerous challenges over the past 30-plus years. While creativity comes naturally, running a business has required continuous learning, adaptation, and growth. The digital explosion has further complicated matters, forcing us to stay relevant in an industry rooted in tangible mediums like paper. Additionally, there has been a noticeable shift from traditional PR to digital marketing and social media for business promotion. Throughout these shifts, MFCC has transformed to provide comprehensive creative services and digital work, both exciting and challenging, particularly in capturing and preserving the art of its tactile presence in an ever-expanding digital world.
As MFCC evolved over the years, the power of connection has remained a guiding force. The challenge has always been in repurposing and repositioning to adapt to changing modalities. Despite these shifts, there’s nothing quite like receiving a keepsake that serves as a lasting reminder of a special occasion or milestone. It’s in these moments that the true essence of human connection shines through, a reminder of the timeless value of personal interaction and meaningful tactile experiences to solidify these moments in memory.
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s crucial to educate a new generation of designers and makers on the importance of social graces and the value of social decorum, which are fading in modern times. In addition to provide them training in the art of print production. The COVID-19 pandemic has only deepened this challenge, casting a shadow of loneliness over many and making it harder to maintain meaningful connections. Furthermore, challenges faced by the US Postal Service serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of staying connected, particularly in a digital age where face-to-face interaction is increasingly rare. Despite these daunting obstacles, the importance of staying connected has never been more prevalent. Reinforcing the need find ways to reach out, to bridge the gaps, and to keep the flame of human connection burning bright in our relationships and communities.
On the other hand, I’ve recently witnessed a remarkable resurgence in the appreciation for the communication arts, particularly the handwritten note, a reminder of the potency of words. I’m energized by the blending of old-world social graces with a 21st-century neurocognitive twist.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For over 35 years, MFCC’s work has extended far beyond the confines of ink on paper, creating enduring connections with iconic clients. Referred to as the “stationer to the stars,” we’ve had the privilege of working with luminaries like Oprah Winfrey for her esteemed Legends Ball, as well as Elton John, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, and Quincy Jones, designing bespoke stationery for their personal collections or milestones.
Our creative journey has been marked by unforgettable projects, and perhaps some of the most notable being designing the Oscar envelope (arguably the most famous envelop in the world!) and hand-painting 24,000 magazine covers for the National Stationery Show in 1985, an achievement that landed on the front page of The Wall Street Journal.
We’ve become trusted partners in the hospitality industry, collaborating with renowned properties. We design guest experience based on a profound understanding of what makes people feel appreciated and acknowledged. Take Atlantis Dubai, where we crafted the grand opening keepsake invitation to captivate guests and turn a moment into a lasting memory, or Stations Casino, where we curated the 1976 private access membership kit to leave a unique emotional imprint and celebrate loyalty. Currently, we’re collaborating with Regent Santa Monica Beach, slated to open May 2024, and are recognized as the Official Luxury Communications Consultants to Forbes travel Guide, further solidifying our expertise in the hospitality sector.
Our enduring partnerships with legendary establishments like Wynn Las Vegas exemplify our commitment to luxury and guest experience. From designing the grand opening invitation suite to crafting memorable pieces for their annual New Year’s Eve celebration, we have consistently delivered sophistication and style. Similarly, our collaboration with the iconic Fontainebleau Miami and Las Vegas showcases our ability to create authentic connections and powerful moments for both clients and guests. Our work in the hospitality industry embodies our dedication to creating true luxury and distinction in everything we design.
Beyond individuals and properties, our portfolio extends to legendary brands like Hermes, Dolce & Gabbana, Netflix, and Swarovski. We design with feeling, social grace, and solutions. Our strategy involves considering every storytelling touchpoint, object, material, environment, design expression, installation, and human interaction as a potential connection to a brand’s unique universe.
Throughout these varied projects and collaborations, the common thread has always been human connection and emotional resonance. Whether designing for Hollywood icons or luxury hotels and brands, the emotional and tactile experience has been at the heart of everything we do. This ethos continues to drive us forward, shaping our work as we strive to create meaningful relationships and memories that stand the test of time.
What matters most to you?
Our work is deeply rooted in the belief that life’s most precious occasions should be commemorated and celebrated. We understand the significance of gratitude, appreciation, and the power of connection. After all, life is a collection of fleeting moments, and by preserving these with a special keepsake or tactile experience, we provide artifacts to conserve the essence of your most cherished milestones.
Marc Friedland Couture Communications sees potential for meaningful connections in virtually any object, material, environment, art form, and touchpoint. We understand that you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. This philosophy underscores the importance of our work as we create, conceive, and make lasting impressions and meaningful designs. We do what we do to help individuals and brands alike elevate, preserve, and cherish their most significant milestones and memories.
