Today we’d like to introduce you to Dulce Camacho.
Hi Dulce, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello, I am so proud of where I am now. Current mother who’s a business owner of a registered home bakery. College student earning her pastry/culinary degree with a focus on business classes as well. Student ambassador and volunteer for a non-profit Ktown organization either by donating, volunteering, or taking it upon ourselves with my family to help out and put a smile on someone’s face. It was quite a challenge to get where I am now. Growing up, we didn’t have a great normal childhood. We were impacted by our parents’ addictions, DV, mental and emotional abuse. While it wasn’t all bad all the time, there was no stability. Dad was deported when I was 14, and well, I moved out young. For a while, I didn’t choose a great path either. I dealt with self-sabotage and depression, so it wasn’t a great mix. One day, I decided to turn things around and did just that. Your past doesn’t define your future, and I’m living proof of that.
Change, growth and to continually trying to be the best version of yourself for yourself and the ones around you is what it’s all about. Finding your purpose and making sure you are doing everything in your power to reach your goals is what I’m doing now.
I started doing flower arrangements with my sis and brother a few weeks after my mom passed in January 2022. They were really depressed, and they came up with this idea while I was in charge of promoting since I was the only one with social media. While it was scary, it was amazing. I didn’t care if no one bought I just wanted them to be distracted a bit and smile. We started getting sales as soon as we posted. N we had a great sales. When my sister returned to her position, I finally let go of fear and started my entrepreneurial journey. It has not been easy, you need to gain so much knowledge in a short period of time, so much investment, you work 24/7 on so many days has you like a zombie lol. On the slow days and tough days, you have to be your own inspiration!
Don’t give up, be persistent, mistakes will happen, but you just keep going with that tunnel vision on your prize.
Some people tell me why am I trying to earn my degree when I’ve been doing so well self-taught. It was my dream to return to college, I am learning so much not just recipes, but nutrition, cultures, public speaking which I need since I suffer from anxiety. Business fundamentals and how to help small businesses. My goal is to continue to grow my business and help other entrepreneurs develop their business plans and start their businesses. I want to culinary classes and host non-profit workshops for everyone, especially low-income people, so they can be informed and guided with information and steps. A lot of us grew up poor, with fear and no information on how to be our own bosses and create generational wealth, and I want to create that for myself and help others do the same. My degree is also to help me work alongside chefs who I admire, after traveling and learning be ready to open up my bakery/cafe. I started working at 16 in the restaurant industry, but I want that experience of working in a bakery and know how to manage everything before I open mine.
Many ask how I do it. Especially with my business doing so good and all the homework, which I will admit has been crazy.
I just do it! I motivate myself every day, those 5 am showers, wake up earlier, or sleep late to make sure I can have time for everything. My priority is my family. I want to make sure I’m balancing and showing them that it can be done. That we can be a superhero to our own story because we are the writers. I want my family to be happy, proud and have everything they deserve. My daughter’s dad is just an amazing supportive partner throughout all of this journey, and I wouldn’t be here without him. We have a set schedule with the girls, and he has helped me with everything so we can balance our girls, work, and daily life. Also don’t have a lot of family but the few that I do I love them so much. It’s not necessary for us to be in touch; we know we are very proud of each other.
Anxiety and depression tried so many times to make me feel less than weak and overwhelmed. To anyone suffering from anything, I hope you are able to manage it, ground yourself when you feel bad, and know it’s temporary. Your life will be better, and you will get over any obstacles that are placed in your path.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Childhood trauma Going through self-healing process
Dealing with anxiety, depression to name a few.
No parents, even if alive, it’s never been a call away support, much less any physical love or finances. We definitely have been there for our parents all the way which I’m glad we could be.
It has not been easy, you need to gain so much knowledge in a short period of time, so much investment, you work 24/7 on so many days has you like a zombie lol. On the slow days and tough days, you have to be your own inspiration!
Don’t give up; be persistent. Mistakes will happen, but you just keep going with that tunnel vision on your prize, and sometimes you are so tired because it’s u alone. Someone can help with the delivery, but you are everything in the operation, making almost no room for mistakes, creating pressure, and leading to anxiety. While it has been under control a while now, and I know how to self-soothe, it’s still a factor
Lack of knowledge
