Check Out Jessy J’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessy J.

Jessy J

Hi Jessy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
At 15, I found my musical calling after hearing Cannonball Adderley with Sergio Mendes. The saxophone’s prominence and the driving force of Latin rhythms captivated me, leading to a love for Brazilian harmonies. Notably, George Gershwin’s fusion of classical and jazz became a significant influence. Trained as a classical pianist since age 4, exploring composers from Beethoven to impressionists like Ravel and Chopin shaped my transition to jazz. My classical roots, especially in chord structures and themes, remain pivotal in my compositions. As an artist, I believe in storytelling, aiming to take listeners on a musical journey with every performance.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As an instrumental jazz artist, I believe the primary challenge I faced was breaking through stereotypes prevalent in a male-dominated field. The demands of traveling for performances posed an additional hurdle for female artists. However, I overcame these challenges by maintaining a vision that embraced the belief that everything, including being a wife, a mom, and a musician, is possible. In the recent years of my artistic journey, I’ve adapted by engaging in extensive studio work in Los Angeles, including house band work with “Dancing with the Stars” and remote recording from home. This shift has not only allowed me to stay active in the industry but has also facilitated personal and professional growth, honing skills that I might not have developed as a touring solo musician.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My creative process is inherently organic; at times, I await inspiration, while on other occasions, it strikes unexpectedly. When inspiration hits, I capture the moment, recording the idea, and later, when time allows, I develop it into a full-fledged song or melody. For instance, in creating my latest album, “Blue,” the compositions were a direct reflection of the emotions I experienced throughout the challenging year of 2020. The separation from family and friends during the pandemic made it a uniquely difficult time. “Blue” encapsulates these varied emotions, serving as a musical expression of the unknown and the myriad feelings encountered during that period.

What’s next?
My artistic journey has undergone significant evolution. Starting as a classical pianist at age 4, I later discovered the saxophone at nine, drawn to its sound and the freedom of improvisation. From classical and straight-ahead jazz to contemporary and studio music, my musical path has been diverse yet interconnected by the essence of music and connection. Over the years, I’ve found that versatility is key. Embracing different instruments and styles has contributed to my longevity as a musician. I’ve learned that understanding the music business is crucial for sustained success, staying informed about evolving industry dynamics. Continual learning and adapting to new business laws have been instrumental in driving my career forward year after year.

In addition to starting my own record label in 2016 and becoming a mother of two boys, I am happy to announce my first children’s album this Mother’s Day. Hope y’all enjoy it.
