Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Ominaya.
Hi DJ Ominaya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in the South Bronx where Hip-Hop was born; so I was privileged to see the culture grow into what it is today. I always loved music and I started DJing at the age of 14. I began very modestly with basic equipment and started doing apartment parties, but I kept at it. That meant not only practicing every day but also keeping up with the music and adding to my vinyl collection. Year over year, I would progress with my skills and got my name up around New York City. I gained momentum and eventually left my merchandising job at H&M so I could DJ full time.
From there, I started to secure bookings at bigger nightclubs, lounges, and also guest spots on SiriusXM and HOT 97 FM. This led me to some incredible opportunities at the ‘Ed Lover Show’ and ‘The Wendy Williams Show’. In 2017 I became the official DJ for multi-platinum rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie which has allowed to perform at some of the biggest venues and shows around the world including Rolling Loud, LOLLAPALOOZA, Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center, Staples Center, 02 Arena, Yankee Stadium and MetLife Stadium. In 2023, I also became the DJ for rapper Lola Brooke and Sherri Sheppard’s nationally syndicated ‘Sherri Show’.
I bet on myself and never gave up.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My road to success has not been easy, but I would not be where I am now without those lessons along the way. This includes at times working for free, sacrificing time with my family and more. But these moments made me a better DJ, event producer, promoter, music personality, and overall businessman. I am grateful for it all.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am not just a DJ – that’s what separates me from my peers. I also own a production company called TTAJJ Entertainment Group where I release music singles and projects. Additionally, I curate weekly events in New York City, including the R&B Playlist Party, The Color Me Badd Brunch, and the Members Only party. On top of that I have my own merch line. My goal was always to have a multiple touchpoints for my fans and followers.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
You can check me out every day on ‘The Morning Breakfast’, my morning radio show on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/djominaya). I was nominated for “Best Morning Show” in 2022 and 2023. I look forward to winning it in 2024!
