Rising Stars: Meet Sharard Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharard Baker.

Sharard Baker

Hi Sharard, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
A long time ago in a neighborhood of Flint, Michigan there was a poet named Sharard Baker who was constantly asked by his brother, G Flatt, to write some rhymes to beats he made on his red Casio keyboard. Though very reluctant to do so, I decided to give it a try and fell in love with HipHop! Also fueled by my love of acting, I decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue a Career in acting and went to AMDA for training. After years of letdowns, I chose to create my own projects, filming and editing my own music videos, jumping into cyphers whenever possible to build a buzz for myself and then I started working with Onslaught Studios, who saw my vision and knew how to help me see my dreams come to life. That’s how I got to where I am today, in a nutshell.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggle is REAL! As a rapper who prides himself as a hip hop artist who believes in creativity and lyricism, we live in a world now where talent will probably never get you in the door, so many nights of performing to small crowds and empty bars can sometimes make you feel discouraged, but the show must go on. Signing with Indie labels who didn’t know what to do with me or didn’t want to do anything with me definitely made me contemplate giving up hundreds of times. As an actor, it hasn’t been better, going years without a single audition or one or two, not having an agent to help me get into doors, and not booking parts after auditions, I’ve been through it all, but giving up was not an option for me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a rapper, actor, screenwriter, and video editor, jack of all trades but I’m mostly known for rapping from all of the cyphers I’ve done over these years. What I am most proud of is the hip hop musical my brother and I with the assistance from Onslaught Studios, put together called “Michigan Scheming, California Dreaming”. We were able to have a legit movie Premiere at the AMC Theater at Universal Citywalk on February 24. By the way, our film is available now on Amazon Prime. What sets me apart from others is 1. My refusal to give up, 2. My willingness to take chances and bet on myself, 3. My creative mind and how I can literally make something out of nothing. Bet the house on me, and you’ll win the jackpot.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love about LA is obviously the weather, but most importantly the opportunities to succeed. Unfortunately in Michigan, these opportunities aren’t as prevalent. What I like least about LA…..TRAFFIC!!!
