Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Morgan Snyder.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lindsay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started writing a blog about 8 years ago at the request of a friend who said: “Lindsay you have a lot of knowledge that people could benefit from you should start a blog.” I hadn’t thought of it before, I had that self-doubt thing going on. I never thought I was “good enough” and at the time if I am being honest I probably wasn’t. I worked as a Sales Executive for a Leadership Company in Atlanta, Georgia, but moved to Los Angeles and resigned from my job to take a bit of a sabbatical, I was in desperate need of some emotional healing. About six months later I was approached by someone asking me to write a sales letter. I never knew people paid people to write, I guess I thought everyone could do it themselves. I heard all the negativity, “Lindsay, people don’t make money writing” and I believed them, yet something in me kept moving forward. I spent about 9 months doing marketing for a wonderful non-profit and then felt the nudge again to step more fully into writing. So, I designed a website and posted it on Facebook and bam, more jobs came my way.
Everything from full correspondence work at a major global tech event to emotionally vulnerable articles on self-hatred for a non-profit which helps teenagers with identity issues. Since then I have I have done projects for MGM Studios, a shoe company start-up out of Germany, and most recently some ghostwriting projects for a couple of books soon to be out. I guess you could call me the “random writer girl” as I don’t have a perfect niche of sorts. But that’s the fun part. I take my 19 years of business experience combined with my passion for writing and my love of variety and clump them together. I am currently finishing a book on fear and dating and beginning to do creative workshops to help people connect their Creativity to their Creator.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t know if there is such a thing as a smooth road, not one that leads anywhere interesting at least. I would often find myself laying on the floor in agony wondering where my next project was going to come from, but one way or another, they would come, I didn’t make near as much money as I did in sales, but the freelance lifestyle was too appealing to me. I couldn’t give it up. So, I did crazy things like rent my friends living room and slept on an air mattress for 4 months to make things work. You know those kinds of crazy things all of us “just starting that new thing” do when living in LA. It hasn’t been easy but it has been an adventure and that is what I love most. A cubical is too boring even if I do know where my next paycheck is coming from.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Well, I am a freelance writer, it’s just me. Most writers are introverts who hall up in a closet (of sorts) and write write write. I, on the other hand, can’t do that, I am a high extrovert and feel often like I am talking to the paper as I type. I love people and enjoy thinking about my reader as I type like I am having a conversation with them. I don’t know if that makes me a better writer, I am guessing not, but I do have 19 years of sales and marketing experience which I would say does make me unique as a freelance creative copywriter. I write my own content and then I also write as a ghostwriter, meaning I write things and other people get the credit.
What were you like growing up?
I was an overthinker much like my 40-year-old self. I remember taking my mom’s big green typewriter out, you remember the 70’s, right? I plopped that big green machine up on a tv dinner stand with the maroonish flip book that stood up on its own and taught myself how to type. With whiteout cartridge in hand, I was ready to go. But I had a learning disability so I was a terrible reader and couldn’t spell or remember punctuation to save my life. So never in a million years would I have ever thought I could be a writer. Although I did win my “Young Authors” Contest is 2nd grade, for my book called “Mr. Smith’s Bakery” which was about talking vegetables. I guess I was a bit before my time, I probably could have created veggie tales, if I would have kept on. I also LOVED playing business, my family owned a few businesses and I would love to play with all the office supplies and use my sisters and cousins as employees and customers. My creative side was there too, I grew up dancing and performing in all different kinds of shows. I always thought I was a creative person stuck in a business person’s body. I like both, that isn’t usually how it goes.
