Meet Carl Borg of Borg Performance Training in Irvine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carl Borg.

Carl, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My background is an endurance based athlete. I started cross country mountain bike racing and eventually branched out to short course triathlon and Xterra races. From there, I took a wild departure from those ventures and transitioned into ultra-distance trail running.

In 2008, I completed the Angeles Crest 100-mile trail run. I spent every off season in the gym but had never really thought that the time I spent in a gym training would eventually turn into a career that I am passionate about. In late 2005 I discovered CrossFit and that is where my real journey began. I was part of the team that founded CrossFit Endurance and traveled internationally teaching certifications for nearly four years. Concurrently, I was also a Head Coach at CrossFit Newport Beach while still training as a cyclist. In 2014, with the support and encouragement from my wife and family, I took the leap to branch out on my own and started Borg Performance Training.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think that any business owner or coach who says that their road has been smooth is lying. In my field of work, there are always challenges, but the rewards far outweigh them. Opening up my own facility and finding the ideal location that was convenient for existing clients while focusing on future growth was a process and at times challenging. Designing and building out the space from scratch (most of which was done by myself and family members) was a puzzle, as my goal was to create a welcoming environment where the athletes could train efficiently and feel at home. However, there isn’t a day that goes by where I walk in the facility and not feel grateful for how far this business has come.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Borg Performance Training story. Tell us more about the business.
Borg Performance Training is a strength and conditioning facility. We focus on bridging the gap to help athletes reach their goals. With my background as an endurance based athlete, I am known for and specialize in coaching and programming strength and conditioning training for endurance based athletes, however, athletes that can be found in my facility also include minor league baseball players, tennis players and rowers, dancers, first responders, masters age athletes, and those rehabilitating from previous injury. I have coached and trained in many different settings ranging from personal training, small and large group fitness classes (aka CrossFit), certification trainings, and workplace wellness programs. Over the years I started to see a need for something different and not offered in Orange County, which is providing personalized programming (not template based) and coaching in an Open Gym setting. Athletes can come train at the convenience of their schedule and availability, under the guidance of a Coach, with a training program that is designed around their “why” while improving their weaknesses to enhance their strengths. I think what sets me apart from the others is the personalization and attention I give to each athlete. Knowing who the person is that makes up the athlete, taking the time to follow-up, check-in, attend their athletic events, and simply being the Coach, they need is very important to me.

I am most proud of this company because it was built based on the values of my family, and it was my family that laid the floor, installed the bathrooms, picked out the furniture, and put together the equipment. This is truly a small, family-run business that runs on my passion to help others while creating a community of like-minded athletes that just want to be better every day.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I will keep this part really simple. Luck is for the ill-prepared. Events in your life lead you to the place you are today and it is what you do with those experiences that will determine what happens tomorrow.

Carl has been a personal friend and coach of mine for several years. He coached and mentored me at CrossFit Newport Beach and encouraged me to become a certified CrossFit coach myself. We worked together and shared ideas and stories. I followed him to his new facility and am confident in saying I’ve never had better training. Carl’s attention to detail, thought and care he puts into personalized programming is unparalleled. I’m proud to call him coach.
