Check Out $HO-TYME’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to $HO-TYME. They and their team shared their story with us below:

$HO-TYME is the youngest grandson of six-time Grammy award-winning singer Ronald Townson of the 5th Dimension. Music has been coded into his DNA from birth. Getting his first piece of audio equipment which was a tape recorder in kindergarten was the introduction to life as a musician. Throughout the city, he has worked with a number of artists both mainstream and underground. Starting off his career first as an R&B singer, he just wanted to perform whenever and wherever possible. The transition from singer to rapper took place as soon as he entered High School, it was no longer cool to him to be a singer which lead the shift in artistry. While God-brother signed record deal with Virgin Records, it allowed him to learn more about the equipment in the studio and the love for production grew. During that era in time, $HO-TYME grew impatient waiting for producers to send over beats for mixtapes so he began to dabble with production. Thanks to a family friend $HO-TYME was offered an internship at BrokenWave studios in Glendale, California where he was mentored and taking under the wing of industry legends Warren Riker and Jason Hollis.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing about this road has been smooth. From having a father who passed away four days before my 12th birthday to the inspiration of the family my grandfather passing before seeing me hit the ground running in the music scene. Getting placements and working with different artists are always challenging. The Swipe District movement was really heavy and the fallout of a couple of members made the campaign go stale after some time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a producer with a nice pen that can make music for just about any scene. Very eclectic when it comes to production. I’m known for my hooks and beats with slapping bass and catchy melodies. I’m most proud of my network, how many different artists I know making a way and having the opportunities to work with and pioneer some really cool spaces within the industry.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the weather and the energy the city provides. I travel a lot for work and there’s nothing like Los Angeles. From the scenery to the weather and also the food.
