Meet Makena Andros

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makena Andros.

Hi Makena, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from generations of woman fiber artists and seamstresses. When I was seven years old I got sick with pneumonia and my Oma taught me how to crochet, 20 years later I got covid during the pandemic and my mom and Oma encouraged me to get back into crocheting to pass the time. I started making clothes for myself and close friends and posting them online, before long it started growing until it became my full-time job.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road and I feel lucky for that to be the case. I attribute that to trusting my vision and skills and being really intentional about what advice I choose to follow.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a fiber artist primarily producing knitwear in various forms. I personally design and create one-off pieces using natural fibers with a slow-fashion mindset. I’m most known for my work with colors and textures, creating intuitive and free-handed shapes and silhouettes. the exciting factor to me about my work is that since it is all handmade, no two pieces are alike. By nature, the work transcends the fast fashion cycle and I am really proud of that.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I really love my community of “gfs” that has evolved online. I have a lot of fun with my brand, never taking the Instagram of it all too seriously, thus creating a space to keep it fun and dumb. I feel so supported not only by those who are buying and wearing my work but also those who are in sharing the excitement that is having a brand that exists entirely online. My work is released in one-off drops. I also have made-to-order options of my more colorful and funky silhouettes that I consider Ur GF staples available in all sizes, as well as a new launch of “UrBasics” knit and crochet closet essentials available in black or white. As of late, I have started connecting more with other fiber artists and have been developing patterns for the gfs who are also making and wearing their own clothes!
