Today we’d like to introduce you to Champagne Dubois.
Hi Champagne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
For over a decade I was working as a commercial photographer, shooting high-end jewelry and skincare campaigns. However, once COVID hit – all productions came to a halt and I was out of a job. It was a really unsettling time (for everyone) and I quickly had to look for other ways outside of work to mentally cope with life’s uncertainty. Alone in my apartment with just my cat, Pony, and the blank walls around me, I started coloring my small world with paint. I created colorful murals and started taking self-portraits with Pony as a way to exercise my creativity while we all were stuck inside. As I shared my painting and portrait journey online, my photography audience quickly fell in love with our new life and grew into a larger community of artists and cat enthusiasts.
Today, Pony and I continue taking portraits in our colorfully painted home and sharing our journey as eccentric artists in Los Angeles.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think much of 2020 was a smooth road! I had to come to terms with the death of a career I had been working on for over a decade, being isolated in a small apartment, and forced to take a long hard look at myself in the mirror in order to adjust my life and move forward.
Although that time was extremely difficult, I’m thankful now for the forced change. There were aspects of my life before 2020 that were unhealthy. I feel much happier and healthy now after the dust as settled and a new journey ahead has been mapped out!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am one of those creatives that has a hard time just creating one kind of art! I went to Cal State Fullerton and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Radio, TV Film. In addition to still shooting photography and film – I paint, play the piano, craft, sew, refurbish furniture, and design home decor.
In 2022, I launched a home decor brand with my partner called Me Make Pretty (www.memakepretty.shop). We design and make uniquely textured products, including vases, trays and lighter cases. It’s been so much fun growing a product-based business after so many years of shooting and working for other brands. I finally have my own brand and I couldn’t be more proud of how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time!
What matters most to you? Why?
Expressing yourself through creativity! Artists have this innate calling to create and I’ve always made that the focus of my life. Putting art and creation at the center has helped me through the ups and downs of life.
