Rising Stars: Meet Nigel Teamer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nigel Teamer. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Nigel Teamer is a Chicagoan who moved to LA to pursue his BFA in Commercial Dance. Nigel was introduced to dance at the age of 16 while performing at school pep rallies. An Alvin Ailey Scholarship recipient, Teamer is known to be very well-rounded in numerous styles such as: HipHop, Ballet, Contemporary, African, and Modern Dance. His versatility as a dancer and artist has enabled him to work with numerous stars. Nigel is excited and eager to showcase his work to the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since I didn’t start dance until I was 16 (which is considered late in the dance world), I always felt like I was playing “catch up”. Every class I took I always felt like I was the worst dancer in the room because I couldn’t pick up choreography quickly, or wasn’t as flexible as so & so… However, numerous Choreographers told me I had a “It factor” or said I was a “Star”. These words of encouragement from peers I looked up to kept me pushing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In May of 2022, I had the opportunity of choreographing a dance piece for Senior Showcase. Out of all the Commercial Dance seniors, my piece won “outstanding Choreography”. This was a really big accomplishment to me because I was always scared of putting my work out there. Getting positive feedback from Joe Brown (One of Beyonces Beychella Choreographers) was everything I needed to hear.

What matters most to you? Why?
Community, sportsmanship, and mental health. A lot of times in this industry we compare our journey to someone else’s and dictate ourselves based on another person’s accomplishments. Instead of comparing journeys or being jealous, clap for the next person. If one of my friends books a job, I got cut on I’m gonna be their number one supporter. In school, people always called me their number one hype man. In dance class 99% of the time I’m screaming at the top of my lungs supporting whoever’s performing because I want them to feel comfortable and appreciated.
