Daily Inspiration: Meet Ahku

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ahku.

Hi Ahku, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story of entertainment began in grade school. I performed in a talent show along with a few classmates in the first grade, at Nystrom Elementary School in Richmond, CA. My stepfather was a drummer for a band, so music and entertainment was always in our home growing up. I lived in the Bay Area for many years, but ever since the age of 10 year’s old, I knew I would live in Los Angeles and pursue my passion. I just didn’t know how. Fast forward to the year 2020 and working for a Studio as a stage manager in Culver City. Along with my friend and colleague Yonash Breneman. When everything shut down, like the rest of the world we had no idea what was to come. So when Yonash came to me with an idea to shoot a movie, I was all for it. We had just shot a one-minute short video along with actress Dana Schick for fun. I assumed this movie would be a short film, but when he said “feature film” I thought he was out of his mind. How could we shoot a feature film without a cast and crew let alone a “PANDEMIC” is actually happening. It was when he reminded me that “anything is possible”. That was the moment I was on board. So began the process of Yonash and his writing partner Anthony Theodorakos “Outta The Garage Productions” started writing the script for our film “The Death Of Us”. Starring Dana Schick and myself. The Death Of Us is about A COVID-era paranoia thriller about two best friends trapped in their home by martial law, while threatened by an extinction-level pandemic.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every morning except for Sundays for nearly three months, Yonash and Anthony would write scenes and send it to Dana and myself. We would rehearse the scenes and shoot it the next day. The process was really fun, to be able to create and live out your ambitions safely while the backdrop is a Pandemic. So we were able to gather a few actors we knew and had worked with on other projects.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I call being an actor as being an “interpreter of the universe”. I believe it’s a calling more than a job. For those who are practicing and honing their craft can understand. What I’m most proud of is not just being in front of the camera but being a part of the process to produce a movie that is independent and has 2 award wins and 5 nominations. My co-star Dana Schick won for the 2022 best actress award at the Independent Filmmakers Showcase IFS Film Festival. I’m also excited to announce that we have partnered up with “Porter- Craig Film and Media Distribution”. “The Death Of Us” is now streaming on Vudu, Comcast Xfinity, Cox Communications and Verizon Fios. The Death Of Us will be seen on several other streaming platforms and networks coming soon.

How do you think about luck?
When preparation meets opportunity, you’re end results is progress and success. It doesn’t always mean monetary gain, but the gratitude of achievement is rewarding with in itself. When a talented writer/ director meets two talented actors, it’s a definite recipe for success.
