Meet Alex Cantu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Cantu.

Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I would love to. I’m Alex Cantu. I’m a rapper, producer, and songwriter from Hanford, CA. I’m currently residing in Los Angeles, CA at the present moment. I’ll give your audience a brief summary of how my journey began and what it took to get to this point in my life:

I was a fourteen-year-old freshmen in high school who heard an old Kid Ink freestyle on The Game’s Ghost Unit mixtape and thought to myself that I could do better than Kid Ink’s attempt upon this old Jay-Z instrumental. So I looked over to my younger brother, Isaiah, and said, “This is trash, I know I could do better” and that’s how it all began.

My tenacity, self-confidence, and self-belief in myself and my abilities are the primary pillars of who I am as a person. Everything I do in this chaotic yet peaceful life of mine is simply a by-product of those self-described pillars. It’s very apparent to those around me and hopefully to those who perceive me from afar, that I didn’t reach this point in my life without continuous help, assurance, feedback, and investment from my ever-evolving support system. And that’s how I’ve gotten to this point in my life, which always leaves me in a forever place of gratitude.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for me. These days, the main challenges in my life have been: balancing my responsibilities, ranging from financial obligations, time for myself, proper physical and mental health choices, a social life, therapy once a week, time spent with my girlfriend, time spent working for both of my music internships and making the time to create my music. And reinvesting the proper resources to produce the content of my own art by releasing songs and marketing my art.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

So I’m a rapper, producer, and songwriter. I’m also a podcast producer intern for What’s Poppin’ LA and an A&R intern for I Am Musicology.

I specialize in hip-hop/rap music and I’m known for being electrifyingly daring in the pursuit of my dreams. And my continuously evolving aspirations and never allowing life to define my limitations.

I’m most proud of my tenacity throughout my journey’s inconsistencies and the hurtful moments I’ve had to endure along the way. My intuition and vulnerability continue to set me apart from others due to my ability to not allow the frustrations of my journey and the jadedness of the world to affect me on an everyday basis in my life.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?

Three things: my self-belief in myself, my support system, and my access to therapy on a weekly basis.
