Inspiring Conversations with Tyrell Bivins of First Dynasty Apparel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrell Bivins.

Hi Tyrell, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always had that entrepreneurial spirit and drive for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Florida I was one of those neighborhood kids that walked around with my Dad’s lawnmower knocking on doors in the spring and summer requesting to cut the neighbor’s grass for $20. My brother and I had the neighborhood locked down too by the way. Lol.

I learned some valuable lessons through that experience. It showed me at a young age that owning and operating a business requires more time than you ever actually have, and it takes hard work and much patience to get to your destination.

Over the course of time, I experimented with different ventures, but fashion has always been something of significant interest to me. I’ve always wanted to design and wear my own brand and build something that my children could benefit from in the future, as many of us dream about. In 2018 I began to design custom t-shirts for my then four-year-old son, Dominic. He was my first model for the clothes that I created and still models apparel for me now. I wound up getting a significant amount of orders for the various items I had designed, both for him and myself. The demand became great enough that it encouraged me to start a business. So First Dynasty Apparel, LLC was established in January 2019.

After having mild but motivating success initially in Oklahoma, I wound up moving to Hawai’i a few months after starting the company. While here we’ve had the opportunity to create some incredible relationships within the local community in Hawai’i that have helped propel our success and aid in generating some buzz and a loyal following.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been about as smooth as sandpaper, lol. So I’m an Active duty service member and the Army moved me in December 2019 to Hawaii for a new job position almost exactly a year after starting First Dynasty Apparel, right as I was getting in stride in Oklahoma. As we all know, the covid-19 pandemic struck fiercely beginning in late 2019. This impacted my business tremendously, compounding challenges on top of the ones that I was already facing by being located on an Island. Challenges with locating resources and manufacturers that would work with a start-up were pretty frustrating, but we sought and identified solutions that enabled the company to continue to operate.

I’m grateful for the lessons though because they forced me to figure out how to maneuver around those challenges and identify new ways to get the job done.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think it’s possible that timing and a bit of luck could be contributors to what I would chalk the success in my life or business to be. However, I believe that success happens at the moment when preparation meets opportunity. The better you prepare for the likeliest of scenarios, the greater chance you have of being successful.

The journey of building a successful clothing brand like First Dynasty Apparel is a complex one, and luck can certainly play a role in it. However, luck is not the only factor that determines success. Hard work, perseverance, and a clear vision for the brand are just as important.
