Today we’d like to introduce you to Me’Kayla Franklin. They and their team shared their story with us below:
From the time she was eight years old, Me’Kayla always knew she wanted to work in animation. She knew she wanted to go to only one school, get one degree, and do one thing in life- and that was to entertain the next generation. Me’Kayla studied Animation and Dramatic Writing at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Since she wasn’t too far from her hometown, she felt comfortable and secure in a space that allowed her creativity to flow. Though character design and show running were her ultimate goal, she fell in love with production during her final year in college. From there, she shifted her goals to becoming a producer in the animation industry. As of 2023, she is a Development Production Assistant at DreamWorks Animation studios. Some of her credits include the award-winning preschool show Madagracars: A Little Wild, several unannounced DreamWorks projects, and two student films that made their rounds at a few local festivals. Me’Kayla hopes to inspire young girls who have the passion and drive to see themselves in the media.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Me’Kayla is the definition of a homebody. She went to school in her hometown and never lived outside of Georgia before 2022. Leaving her friends and family was one of the biggest challenges for Me’Kayla. However, because of the constant support and love she gets, she realizes no matter the distance she is never alone 🙂 (I know corny)
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a Development Production Assistant, MeKayla works closely with artists and creative executives in order to ensure everything falls into place. Her day-to-day includes scheduling, taking notes, assisting with budgets, and creating design packs for 3D modelers.
What makes you happy?
A 5 season series with a good plot and lovable characters. Oh, my family is nice too 🙂
