Life & Work with Laura Huertas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Huertas.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Colombia and moved to New York at the age of six, where I began my journey as a visual artist.

During a recess in elementary school, I would spend most of my time with a camera in hand, capturing all of my classmates. From there, I remember becoming so enthralled with telling a story through the lens of a camera.
The colors. The movement. The feeling. It has all been so electrifying to me to this day.

During high school in 2011, I shot my first wedding for a close family member. I continued to shoot religiously and weddings found me again organically a few years later.

I quit my job in 2015 and fearlessly decided to pursue photography full-time shortly after I was accepted to NYSID in Manhattan, where I got my bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. Another visual art form that I’m incredibly passionate about on all levels.

I lived in NYC until mid-2020… a place that fed my creative soul in ways I wish I could even begin to explain. I’ve resided in LA since then and it’s been the most beautiful heart opening adventure. A city bursting with charm, and panache and endless creative opportunities.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely had its challenges but mostly has just been an ongoing learning curve. All in all, it’s pushed me into tremendous growth and radical self-love.

I think for me, the second I became less focused on what others were doing and creating; was the moment I started to feel the most connected to my work. As an artist, it’s so easy to fall into the comparison trap and I think it’s crucial to stay connected to what makes you different and why you fell in love with the craft in the first place.

Finding your voice is a constant journey, one I embark on every single day. It is continuously carved and reshaped as I explore new countries, narratives, books, films, people.. etc.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an editorial lifestyle and wedding photographer, I love to create moments that allow my clients to feel. Moments that completely transcend and bring them right back to that moment in time.

My approach is multi-layered and intuitive. Translating the fluid interplay of art and love in its purest form. Diving deep into a process that is intricately connected to how I draw clarity from emotions and translating them into pictures.

Putting my clients at the center of everything that I do by cultivating a safe space for memories to unfold without reservation. Leaving a piece of myself in everything & everyone that I photograph.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
That the best photos are always a triumph of spontaneity and letting go.
