Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Collins.
Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started when I played my first role as Abraham Lincoln in the 2nd grade! I spoke the words “four scores and four years ago…” shortly after that-I was met by a big applause in a small auditorium! Performing was my thing! As the years went by-I was either singing with a make-shift microphone or my sister and I would drop rap lyrics at family gatherings! As a child, my mom took me to a commercial agency for representation-but it was short-lived. My mission was to get back to it. So after high school, I took interest in modeling. It wasn’t moving like I wanted it to because I also worked a full-time job and attended Cal Poly Pomona. I still never gave up! My microphone skills as a child has now changed to being a voice actor as well as being able to perform as an on-camera actor!
I always say, getting an audition is like winning the lottery! It means that it’s my time to perform and fulfill my authentic self as much as I possibly can. Acting allows me to become whoever I want to be. I like to refer to a Bruce Lee quote “Be water my friend”. As we know it, water can take on the shape of anything. I use this same thinking to transform my emotions and experiences in acting.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Let the choir sing, “it has not been a smooth road”- lol! As with all things, there will be challenges faced. But, it’s up to you on how you make it happen. It’s been 9 years since I left working days and started working the overnight. This is the only way that I can handle auditions and or get to a booked job-without jeopardizing the job that pays the bills. Ever since then, I have never looked back. People often ask, “How do you do it? Or, “When do you sleep?” Acting is part of my life, so I found a way to get to it! When it’s audition time-after work I go home, transform my hair, make-up and get my wardrobe together to play! The reality is-there will be a lot of no’s. You may also think that you are not good enough. But, guess what? You are good enough. You just have to keep knocking on the doors for the next opportunity!
My mentality right now is: Can’s stop and I will never stop!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do commercial, voice acting and theatrical! Voice acting entails commercials, animation, narration, etc. and I love how it’s so broad. I audition for mostly commercials, sprinkled with a little bit of animation. If you can handle moving silly or making faces-whatever you have to do to get that emotion out in an isolated booth-you are in a great place!
I enjoy on-camera commercial work as well-because you never know what you’re going to play. One day you may be a CEO and the next you are the girl next door buying a cell phone!
I am most proud of booking a radio spot for Hyundai Ioniq 5! I was a cheerleader in a Krispy Kreme spot. I’ve done some projects with BuzzFeed, Kohls/Popsugar and I’m looking to see more success in the future!
The thing that sets me apart from others is that I appreciate the process. I know that things don’t happen overnight and that’s okay. I’m humble, easy to work with and I always maintain my kindness and professionalism-which goes a long way in any industry. I’m 1 of 1 and there is no one else that can represent what I do!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important thing that I have learned is respecting the process. Most people give up too soon-which is unfortunate. When you give up, you’re not giving yourself a chance. Staying consistent in whatever you do will eventually get you to your goal. Always, always, always treat people with kindness and respect because you never know who is watching. That session director-may one day become that casting director and you want to be the one who stood out in a positive way-not the other way around!
