Exploring Life & Business with Jenna Lagana of Lagana Wellness Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Lagana.

Hi Jenna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Southern California, I started playing club soccer at the age of 6. Like so many other athletes, I was drawn into the world of fitness and performance from a young age – I remember begging my dad to let me go train with him at the gym when I was 14 years old. Once I reached high school, I became somewhat obsessed with my recovery routine due to the demands placed on my body from my rigorous training schedule; I was religious with my Friday routine of massage and chiropractic visits.

I recognized early on how you treat your body directly impacts your health and performance. I was drawn to the world of sports medicine/athletic training during high school, but I did not want to work in a school setting. Between my commitment with weight training and my obsession to recovery, I decided I could combine the fields to create the job that I wanted. At the time, I didn’t know of any chiropractors doing more than just adjusting/manipulation, but I understood their knowledge of biomechanics/diagnostics could easily be combined with training principles to create a very well-rounded role.

Fast forward to today, I am a medical provider with Team USA and I run a private practice that is completely different from any other I have experienced!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lagana Wellness Company?
My practice is the premier sports medicine destination in Los Angeles.

With my experience working sideline with various sports and my education background in sports medicine, I have created a clinically guided movement-based practice that addresses the needs of everybody. When was the last time you spent an hour 1-on-1 with your provider? That is what sets this practice apart from others. I pride myself on providing my patients with an accurate diagnosis to guide our treatment plan – we have a very clear start and end point for care.

Although the patient’s goals guide our overall treatment plan, it is a requisite to ensure my patients feel confident squatting, deadlifting, and overhead pressing before their treatment plan is complete. We should have the confidence to move in these patterns outside of the gym as they are essential for the random tasks we face throughout the day; getting up and down from a chair (squat), lifting groceries into our car trunk (deadlift), and putting dishes away in your cabinets (overhead press).

Complaints and difficulties vary so much patient to patient so why would treatment be any different? Hands on therapy and rehab prescription is unique to each one of my patients and it progresses as the patient progresses. I am so privileged to work with a wide range of individuals and to play a different role for each of them. Some patients have never been taught how to properly brace their core and lift something heavy, some are high-level athletes looking to get an edge in performance, and some are just active adults looking to optimize recovery and prevent future injury.

The most common comment I hear from my patients, “I didn’t know a chiropractor could treat like this”. It is an absolute honor to have a patient trust me when they previously tried physical therapy or other types of chiropractic care, but they did not get the results they wanted. It is a huge commitment to trust somebody else with your health, but I feel so confident in helping people return to activities they never thought they would do again. The blend of soft tissue therapy, spinal adjustments, and rehab is tailored to you and it changes appointment to appointment – treatment progresses as you progress.

How do you define success?
I find success in the small wins day to day. Of course, I have long-term goals, but hearing the accomplishments of my patients day to day fills me with gratitude. I had a patient who suffered from chronic shoulder pain – she completed a course of physical therapy and they released her because her shoulder had full range of motion. She traveled for work and was extremely frustrated with her continued inability to lift her carry-on into the overhead compartment and her inability to pull her checked bag from the conveyor belt. After a few weeks of care, my patient had her first trip since we started treating together. She was nervous, but our rehab was tailored to her lifting and placing both her carry-on and checked bag so she felt confident attempting it on her own. The patient called me after and was shocked at how light her 70lbs checked bag felt. I asked about how the carry-on situation went and she had completely forgotten that was ever an issue because of how at ease she felt with the movement on the plane. That is success. Being able to give somebody confidence in their body is an unmatched feeling and something I strive for every day. The small wins make the biggest difference.
