Rising Stars: Meet Evelyn Moreno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Moreno.

Hi Evelyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a freelance traveling hairstylist. First of all, I want to mention that I had no idea I would ever get into hairstyling. I started going to school to become a nurse. Right after high school, I started going to my local community college, Los Angeles Harbor College, to complete my AA degree and my general education. After, I graduated and transferred to California State Dominguez Hills, Go Toro’s! and realize that nursing wasn’t for me. I decided to major in business and pursue law. I graduated with honors and received my bachelor’s in business. I immediately transferred to UCLA, Go Bruin’s! and completed a technical program for paralegals.

After graduation, I was able to get a job at an injury attorney’s office. I worked there for a bit but the stress and strain was too much for my body. I was born with a chronic stomach condition and had to deal with it my whole life. I would always push through in school to get things done. Once I started working in a 40-plus hour work week, I realized I had to find something else that would work with my condition. I decided to leave my job and look for something where I would be able to be my own boss. Problem was I had no idea where to start. I hit a plateau and got depression for a few months. I felt I had failed. I didn’t give up and tried learning makeup by practicing on myself but I just didn’t pursue it. I later decided to get into making jewelry but that also didn’t work out for me. I decided I wasn’t going to stress myself and be patient. My best friend, Aileen, had gone to beauty school to become a makeup artist. She told me that it was hard for her to get clients because most of them wanted someone that could provide both makeup and hair. She told me that I was actually pretty good at styling my own hair and that I should give it a shot. So I thought it was a good idea and I did. I started by watching tutorials on YouTube and Instagram.

Also, a friend at the time gave me a few tips and tricks on how to get my own hairstyling business started. Within a few weeks, I had my 1st client and she loved my work. Then, I decided to take a small course with a local hairstylist and it helped me a lot. Now, my best friend and I team up to do both hair and make-up for all kinds of clients. We specifically specialize in special occasions like weddings, Quinceañera’s, and parties. My hairstyling business has been the best decision I’ve made so far. I hope that I keep growing and learning more every day. Who knew I would end up putting my business degree to good use.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been easy, especially with prices and competition going up. There are some seasons when it gets super slow and there are no clients booking. Then there are some seasons when it gets super busy that I even have to turn down clients. Also, with the fact that I have an illness makes it hard for me to book too many clients. I have to make sure I take it easy. I don’t want to overwork myself and get sick.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a self-taught traveling hairstylist. By hairstylist, I mean someone that styles hair. I specialize in Up-do’s, Curls, Half-Up’s and many other hairstyles. I usually go to my Client’s homes or where they would like me to help them get ready for their event. I have styled hair for brides, Quinceañera’s, models, and even for LA fashion week. What I’m most proud of is seeing the big smile on my client’s faces once I show them their hairstyle. I always try to provide the best service and make sure my clients are satisfied with my service. What sets me apart from others is that I provide detailed work and I love what I do.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe providing excellent customer service and great communication is a big key for my business to succeed. Passion and hard work have helped me get to where I am today.
