Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Kairouz.
Hi Nina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My mother’s name is Najat, but we affectionately call her Najeau. When she was 20 years old, she came to the U.S. from Lebanon. It’s where I lived as a child, and I have vivid memories of my mother sitting in the sun with her hair wrapped in Saran wrap, eyes closed and breath calm, eating pistachios.
My mother and all the generations of women before her would mix oils from the earth with egg whites and create a mask to use on their scalps. They would use this mask weekly, and I looked down on it, wondering why they didn’t just use the expensive products I would see on TV that I coveted so much.
Now I’ve spent over a decade in the hair industry, working as a celebrity hair colorist. So when I had children and suffered from my own hair loss, I set out to find the best solutions out there.
The more I learned and the more specialists I saw, procedures I paid for and products I tried, I finally understood what my mom had been telling me my entire life—that the skin on our face doesn’t stop at our hairline. The scalp is an extension of that skin, and it holds the follicles that need to be nourished in order to grow healthy hair.
My mom offered me her formula and together, we created Najeau, a line of non-toxic, organic scalp and hair products that, with consistency, will transform the overall health of your hair, promoting hair growth and reducing hair loss. Our oils are hand poured and we mix them with love one small batch at a time, ensuring freshness and maximum potency of ingredients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly has not, but it has been a journey in the best way! I’ve learned so much Especially how to fail and how to figure out the next move. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve spent money and printed out a label or a box and have had to re-print them because of my spelling error or I changed the formula. We are just a small business trying to navigate this big world of beauty and were trying to raise our own money and run our other jobs and raise families and we are passionate about this pridyct and we don’t even know where to begin, it was from the grace and knowledge and kindness and generosity from my clients, who helped me for fun in for free that each step we took was with their help.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
With over 15 years of experience, Najeau founder and celebrity colorist Nina Kairouz has worked with thousands of scalps to understand the why and how of hair structure, follicle health, and pH. Nina grew her clientele at the acclaimed Chris McMillian Salon, Mare Salon, and Serrano Salon while developing a sought-after style of coloring that has won her clients like Katy Perry, the Gettys, Kate Mara, Jim Carrey, Al Pacino, D’Arcy Carden, Nikki Reed, Nicole Scherzinger, and Cara Delevigne.
As she’s grown with her clients through their life phases, from health issues and surgeries to postpartum and aging, she’s expanded her knowledge of functional trichology at every stage.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Just believe in YOU. Listen to your intuition.
Whatever I have learned is because of the elders before me, including my mom, who taught me that nature is wisdom in tandem. Our products were built out of consciousness and I am just the messenger, and every product we make, we try very hard to make sure we help you feel the wisdom in nature.
I don’t consider myself a religious person but I do believe we are all connected through a deeper source of spirituality that runs through us all. So, I look for signs and I try, I really try to listen and I am full of mistakes and my heart breaks often…but at least they are of my own making and because I tried…
