Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Karns. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Brett Karns has been in the field of real estate practically “his entire life”. At the age of 15, an intern in his father’s real estate office, Brett was introduced to a vocation that would ultimately become his passion, all while delivering just sold flyers on a beloved skateboard. While attending college for a degree in Business, Brett concurrently obtained his real estate license and thus began his 30 year real estate career. However, selling homes wasn’t Brett’s truest passion. Well before it was trending to “flip” houses, Brett purchased his first home (at the young age of twenty) and after remodeling the entire property, he sold the home for profit. Brett would do this over a dozen more times throughout his twenties, honing his now signature style and building a respected reputation. On the forefront of home development in the Los Angeles, Brett was poised to make his entrance and in 2009, WestKoast Properties, LLC- A boutique development firm emphasizing quality over quantity, was born. WestKoast Properties is currently thriving, with multiple custom home & multi-residential projects throughout the Los Angeles area. Known for their exceptional quality and design, they’ve set the standard for luxury home values in the area.
Dedicated to building homes where he personally would reside, Brett prides himself on his attention to detail and finding just the right buyer for each custom build. By selling his own properties, essentially “giving his creation away,” Brett has gained firsthand experience in the joy of changing someone’s life while watching their next chapter unfold. As a Father & dedicated husband, Brett and his wife have placed great emphasis on giving back to their community as a way to teach their young daughter humility. By using his designer skills and builder background Brett and family have supported such causes as TreePeople LA, Habitat for Humanity, Union Station Homeless Services and Heal the Bay. Most recently, renovating the new space for the Interfaith Food Pantry.
With a passion for design and sought after style, he created Brett D. Karns Designs to bring a piece of his luxury home aesthetic into your space. Whether it be new construction, kitchen remodel, home addition, ADU or exterior design Brett gives each client the same attention to detail that he has built his impeccable reputation on. As an animal & nature lover, Brett enjoys quality time with his family and hikes throughout Los Angeles.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Buying, Selling and Building in Real Estate is not for the faint of heart. There are constant struggles from City “Red Tape” to volatile markets, theft, recent weather, a global pandemic. There are so many contributing factors that can “Make or Break” you in this business. I choose, then, to focus on the end result. Instead of getting caught up in the road blocks, I seek solutions and forward moving momentum. This mindset frees me from the day-to-day challenges. Over the years I’ve had so many obstacles to navigate, ultimately getting me to where I am today-A more resilient, mindful, fine-tuned builder, whose passion for his product hasn’t wavered. Having the right mindset and true passion for what you do can set you apart from your competition and truly reward you in life!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a small boutique firm specializing in new home construction and design consulting. With a background in real estate sales, I’ve been fortunate enough to build and sell what the Los Angeles market is looking for. My homes tend to sell faster than my competition because of the care and design details I add to each specific property. I knew I was on the right path when I was asked to advertise in Architectural Digest. An exclusive invitation, not offered to many. Having my property, that I built and personally designed, featured in the pages of “THE” pinnacle design magazine…Mind Blown! What sets me apart, while keeping up with trends and constantly evaluating new designs, I’m not “trendy” there’s a distinction. Its about refinement and my products longevity.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I remember it vividly, I was five years old and my parents bought a new custom home in Los Angeles, CA. I remember going monthly to the property, seeing the build progress. There was so much anticipation for the finished product. Picking and choosing upgrades, new furniture, even the smell of the fresh cut lumber is still so vivid. I’m sure it has everything to do with the fact that I build homes for a living. Ingrained in me is this joy in anticipation of creating someone’s dream. Being an integral part of the pride homeownership brings to my buyers, is incredibly rewarding. The satisfaction in delivering a product that becomes an extension of who you are and how you live, not to mention changing the architectural landscape of Los Angeles, well, that just never gets old. And of course, to this day, my favorite smell…fresh cut lumber.
