Today we’d like to introduce you to Liv Miraldi.
Hi Liv, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always loved storytelling. I was writing chapter books in 2nd grade, and by middle school I realized you could tell chapters in the form of songs. After high school, my parents insisted I go to college, so I googled ‘songwriting major’ (not expecting to find anything) and I found Belmont University in Nashville. During my senior year there, I met Noreen Prunier– she asked what my plans were after school. I said I was giving myself a year to find a publishing deal (which in hindsight sounds so crazy because a year is not a long time at all). She insisted on helping me book co-writing sessions and ultimately introduced me to label exec and producer busbee. In 2019, I signed to busbee’s publishing company, Altadena, alongside Warner Chappell. He had me move to LA, so I could be fully immersed in the pop world. During quarantine, I decided to post demos on Tiktok to see if I could get people to tag artists that might want to sing my songs. After some viral moments and encouragement from strangers on the internet, it became clear to me that some of these songs were my story to tell, and I decided to release “Wingwoman” and “Same People.” My 3rd single, “Blush” comes out March 10th!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth would not be how I’d describe my career. Three weeks after signing to my mentor, busbee, he passed away. I was alone in LA trying to figure out how to make my way in a massive city where nobody knew me or my work. To make matters more difficult, the pandemic hit and what began as a two-week trip to Ohio ended up becoming a 6-month stay. During this period it was really tough to get sessions with artists and establish myself as an LA writer. I think it’s important to look at the positives though. I would have never had the courage to move to LA without busbee, so he got me here. During 2020 I was willing to do zoom sessions and was able to work with people I might not have gotten in with otherwise. It also led me to use Tiktok which helped me launch my artist career. Silver linings can be found woven in even the darkest seasons.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an artist and songwriter, I’ve been lucky enough to work with hundreds of different performers. Every time, I always find the lyric to be the most important piece. I love digging in on concepts and finding the punchline that makes the listener feel something. Even if it’s helping them feel seen, less alone, or just verbalizing something they hadn’t been able to prior. Once the words are written then I can plan the artwork, content, production, etc. I’ve spent the last six years really developing my voice through words, so the hope is that whenever I work on a song, the fingerprint from my pen shines through.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
To be in entertainment, you have to be willing to take risks. You have to be willing to bet on yourself and your abilities when nobody else will. Nothing is guaranteed, and nothing is gained if you don’t put yourself on the line. Any time I’ve considered walking away, I think “yeah, but what if tomorrow is the day I write a song that changes my life and the lives of others?” and then I’m roped back in. Going to music school was a risk, signing a deal was a risk, moving to LA was a risk, posting my demos online was a risk. I don’t always get the outcome I hoped for in the moment, but doors do open…sometimes better than I could have imagined.
