Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaveri Karhade.
Hi Kaveri, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a board-certified dermatologist in the San Francisco Bay Area. I focus on treating acne, acne scars, hair loss, pigmentation, skin cancer, vitiligo, and a full range of dermatological conditions- especially for those with brown skin!
In medical school at the University of Michigan, I was interested in the psychosocial impact skin conditions have on people- when you don’t like what you see in the mirror, it has a HUGE impact on your self-esteem and confidence. Thus, my career has shaped to focus on helping people improve their skin both in terms of medical skin conditions and cosmetics. I have spent many years doing research in skincare and love sharing my findings with the world, through social media and through conversations with my patients.
I completed my dermatology residency at Brown University and since then have been practicing in both NYC and SF, ahead of opening my own practice in the Bay Area. I feel passionate about helping people with brown skin achieve their skin goals in a natural, holistic way, even incorporating some traditional methods of skincare! We have been underrepresented in the dermatology community for such a long time it’s time for a doctor who understands brown skin.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Dermatology residency is extremely competitive- thus, you can be certain that if you’re seeing an MD dermatologist, you’re in good hands! Unfortunately, in today’s world, there are many non-dermatologists pretending to have the same level of training – sadly, the onus is on patients to do their research and find truly well-trained physicians. Because cosmetic companies are incentivized to sell as much of their product as possible, people are out there performing injectables like neurotoxins and fillers with as little as a ONE-HOUR VIRTUAL TRAINING SESSION! Sadly, physicians like myself see all the side effects and complications from these medical procedures. In contrast, dermatologists spend years studying anatomy, laser biology, and the science behind all these procedures to truly understand how best to perform them. Patients need to do their own research to find someone with true training!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kavi MD Dermatology?
Kavi MD Dermatology is a boutique medical and cosmetic dermatology practice opening in Palo Alto, CA in 2023! As a board-certified dermatologist who is uniquely experienced in treating brown skin, I focus on helping my patients achieve their very best skin short and long term. It’s important to me to help each client establish an entire minimalistic skincare regimen and a plan for their skin in terms of injectables, lasers, and other procedures to help them achieve their very best skin, with the minimum number of procedures necessary and with keeping affordability in mind. A consultation with me will result in not only answers to any immediate skin questions, but a full assessment on your skin and a 1 year, 5 year, and 20 years plan to keep your skin natural, beautiful, and subtle without breaking the bank.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think calculated risks are important to success, but in the world of medical procedures I am actually concerned there is way too much risk taking happening. Probably 80% of the people doing injectables on Instagram don’t have adequate training, in my opinion, and patients are the ones who pay the price for it. I think the medical world needs to be more highly regulated than it currently is.
