Rising Stars: Meet Neon Nash

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neon Nash.

Hi Neon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always wanted to be a singer since I was a kid and started taking lessons at age 11 in hopes that one day I could be a performer. I joined every choir and musical I could growing up but it wasn’t until May of 2022 that I started making music on my own. It didn’t take me long to realize that I have a huge passion for it, but I had no experience writing my own songs. That’s when I found inspiration in one of my favorite things, anime! I’ve been a fan of anime since childhood and grew up with some of the most popular series’ of all time. It felt so natural to pivot the themes in my music to match some of my favorite anime, and I couldn’t resist titling my first anime track after my #1 favorite anime Soul Eater! It’s surreal to be able to combine my two favorite things in the whole world and make it my art.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Despite having big dreams of singing and performing, I’ve always had a nearly debilitating fear of singing in front of others no matter the setting. In the past few years, I tried everything from group karaoke nights to private video calls with friends, just trying to push myself with practice. I began to worry about never being able to get over my fear, so last May I decided to remove the temptation of giving up on my dream by releasing my first EP. I felt as though that was the ultimate accountability, and if the world knew of my dream then I could never give up. Because of this, my first releases of music felt like a shocking plunge meant to test my resolve but since then I feel much more at ease. If anything, I’m so excited to keep releasing more and more songs and to keep getting better as I get to know myself as an artist. Especially since I’ve started making anime-themed music.

I’ve definitely come a long way with my acceptance of myself and my interests. There was a time where liking anime was something I was bullied for in school and I often hid my interests in fear of attracting unwanted attention. But now I couldn’t care less if anyone finds me nerdy for liking anime, it’s something that makes me who I am and I’m happy to put that into my music.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Before starting my own music I was most known for my presence on YouTube and TikTok as a cosplayer. That time really defined me as a creative as I spent my days writing comedy sketches and filming silly videos in cosplay with my friends. It was a lot of fun and I definitely still enjoy cosplaying and attending anime conventions regularly. I’d say I’m the most proud of my progress lately as an artist, I think my recent single ‘Soul Eater’ is my best song yet. I feel as though I’m improving a lot in my songwriting and melody writing and I think it shows in this track. Being able to write songs that center around my favorite characters and dynamics in anime is really exciting to me.

What’s next?
My next milestone goal is definitely performing live. I can’t wait until I can make my way through the venues I know and love in LA and beyond performing my own songs. And I know I’ll feel so proud of myself after I’ve done it. Other than that, I’m just looking forward to making tons of new music. My goals for my future music projects will follow all the anime series I’ve grown up with that mean a lot to me and I can’t wait to show the world what I can do!
