Today we’d like to introduce you to TxTHEWAY.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born the child of two Jamaican immigrants who moved to America for a better shot at life. My mother was a cashier at a local supermarket and my father was a musician/singer turned local businessman. He was unable to realize his musical dreams under the responsibilities of marriage and raising three young children in a new country but as life would have it some of his gifts was passed on.
With a natural affinity toward music and poetry, I got my start as a local rap artist in South Florida. As I developed my style and sound I learned to record and vocal produce myself, which in turn led me to helping other artists on the same path. This all paid off in 2015 when I co-wrote, recorded and vocal produced the song “Light It Up” for Major Lazer ft. Nyla and later the remix which included Fuse ODG. The original was recorded from my bedroom and the remix was done from the living room of my first LA apt in North Hollywood. That song became a springboard that allowed me to work in studio as a songwriter with some groundbreaking and legendary artists across genres including Sublime with Rome, Wyclef Jean, Vali (of Emotional Oranges), Leon Thomas, and Ty Dolla $ign to name a few.
In 2021 a song I cowrote titled “Drive” by Black Coffee and David Guetta became the highest streamed song from Black Coffee’s groundbreaking album “Subconsciously.” The album went on to win the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album.
Now after accomplishing so much with others and helping them move the world forward through their art I’d like to add my own colors to the cultural tapestry by releasing my debut artist project.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
To quote the legendary Buju Banton “It’s not an easy road.” I’ve faced more than my fair share of hardships over the years, too much to list in this interview. I’ve lost friends and family to gun violence, police brutality, cancer, etc. In fact, I’m doing this interview right on the heels of burying my father who unfortunately died while visiting me here in LA this past Thanksgiving weekend. He was only 60 years old. People think this industry is hard but nothing hits harder than real life, I just try to keep in mind that there is a purpose and plan for our lives so long as we’re brave enough to step out on faith, keep moving forward, and squeeze the most out of every day.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist first with really high creative standards and as a function of that, I’ve been able to become a curator in every aspect of creation. Whether I’m picking the best song lyric, the best vocal take, the best kick drum, or the right harmony.
What I’m most proud of as a creative is the ability to be a provider for my family through my art without compromising my integrity as an artist. I’ve maintained ownership of both my master’s and my publishing so when you hear my art it’s organic, it’s unfiltered, and it’s my truth.
Independence is enough to set me apart from most industry-synthesized artists but to answer your question the thing that I think really sets me apart is my unflinching honesty during the creative process. I take full responsibility for my art, its execution, and the messaging I deliver to my audience. I hope to get that across in my debut album releasing later this year.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me most as a person is God, family, and community. As an artist, I just want to make music that is honest and raises the frequency of everyday life for the listener. Something that in the worst of times can be a comfort and eventually even inspire people to make the best of times. I’ve seen what music can do to a community both negatively and positively and it’s important to me to move myself and the world in the direction of the latter if possible.
