Life & Work with Yulia Kirillova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yulia Kirillova.

Hi Yulia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started modeling when I was 19 and it opened the world to me. I was able to travel and lived in cities like Tokio, Bangkok and Paris. Eventually, I moved to Paris and continued my modeling career along with studying acting at Le Course Florent. Music and parties were always a part of my life though, I was going out a lot. Nine years ago I came to Los Angeles and stayed forever. Nightlife is different here compared to Europe, less clubs and more private events and house parties. At least for my taste and experience. Also, I discovered a whole world of festivals like Burning man and so on. I was never a big drinker and I don’t do drugs but there’s something so freeing about going out, being in the dark and listening to some good deep house or dancing your ass off with nice hip-hop beats.

One day my “party” partner in crime just “sold me” to her friend as a DJ. I had no idea how the DJ controller even functioned. But I did it, it was one of the best sets I’ve ever done, finishing with someone pouring champagne all over my rented equipment. I made $300 that night. After that, it was just a combination of luck and promoting myself and being a good DJ. I’m proud to say that recently I worked for brands like Louis Vuitton and Levi’s for example. I keep working on my skills though, there’s so much out there it could be overwhelming. So I just truly enjoy every gig I get because I’m lucky to do what I love and make my living of it. I didn’t abandon my acting ambitions though. When the time is right I’ll get back to it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The only struggle I’ve had in all my occupations was instability. That’s what I experience with DJing these days. There are some months that are really great and some are just slow. And in those moments I just take care of myself and spend more time with my family and friends.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full time DJ. I love playing hip hop, rap, cool remixes, classic throwbacks, deep house, dance house and I can throw some pop hits here and there. I guess mostly I’m proud of my music taste because that’s what makes every DJ unique. Also, the ability to learn fast and be open to new genres and adventurous. Performance aspect of DJing is also huge, I definitely enjoy the music and myself when I mix and the audience feels that energy.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In a year things are going to change a lot, I can’t even think about 5-10 years. With music and DJ it’s becoming more and more available to everybody and easier with technologies. I think the competition is just gonna get higher and it will push everyone to be better and the best will survive. Online services definitely are another thing that became very popular during the lockdown. Also, I feel there’s gonna be more and more young DJs, really young, like teenagers, there’s so many kids these days are trying to DJ these days and they learn so fast and they are so good at tech. Maybe the music might change, like higher vibration tunes, because I feel more and more people starting to work on themselves and what type of food or energy they consume and psychologically music is a very powerful tool. It’s just a thought) But definitely the industry is only going to grow, people will never stop partying…
