Today we’d like to introduce you to Ido Tadmor.
Hi Ido, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a native-born Israeli dancer, choreographer and an actor. I’ve received my love for art and live performances from my mother who used to be a ballerina and the understanding of the importance of putting in the work from my father who is one of Israel’s most acclaimed educators. I was chosen by the Vienna comity as one of the ten best contemporary dancers in the world and was honored to lead and guest with some of the most important ballet companies around the world. As a choreographer, I have also worked with internationally acclaimed companies, universities, and schools all over the world. I have had my own contemporary ballet company for 13 years and have directed the Israeli national ballet as the Artistic Director and artistic consultant.
Six years ago after touring the world for more than three decades as the ambassador of the dance of Israel, I have received an incredible job offer to become the presidential fellow with the Chapman university dance department. This was the reason that made me move from Israel to the United States. In Israel, I have acted in feature films, TV, drama series, I was a judge on, so you think you can dance Israel and choreographed for dancing with the stars Israel. I have participated in many commercials and fashion campaigns through the years. In Los Angeles, I also have my open-level ballet classes at the Mimoda studio I’m mid -city where I have developed an incredibly beautiful community of dancers of all ages and of different nationalities. These days I’m also studying to become a Reiki master. Some other areas of interest that I am attached to are writing and producing for TV.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to an international success is never smooth. Being a dancer, traveling all over the world can be very challenging for the body and mind leading to injuries, fatigue, and has also resulted in giving up on many things that people usually do like taking vacations and traveling just for fun. Luckily, I have always had the support of my family and of my beautiful husband. There were times where financial problems have occurred and that demanded an extra work to be able to survive. I do love to work, and I believe that even the most talented people in the world should have a sense of responsibility and awareness for what’s really necessary in order to become successful. These days I see it also with my husband Shalev Lavan who is building an incredible international fashion styling career. He’s a great reminder of the importance of work and dedication…
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve started my career as a classical ballet dancer, and then with the years shifted to contemporary ballet. I have choreographed more than 50 contemporary ballet creations with different institutions. As a ballet teacher, I have developed my own way of teaching, an extremely physical and unique strong ballet technique. These days besides my dancing career I am very focused on developing new formats for reality shows, mainly dealing with arts and culture, and also focusing on acting.
As a dancer, I am mostly known for extremely strong technique, flexibility, and high long physical lines. As a choreographer, I am known for the ability to combine both physicality and theatrical elements. As a teacher, I’m known for being extremely supportive, giving notes and corrections to everyone that steps into my studio. In the other areas that I am attached to, I am aiming for creativity and always challenging myself with renewing myself.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Although Covid has put a temporary stop on performances and live classes, I have found that if there is anything that you really love and believe in, you’ll find the way to continue your path. We have been teaching and choreographing on zoom, which actually let us understand and learn new dimensions of dance that we couldn’t have learned in any other way. I’ve also learned that I can always trust my inner strength and my ability to move in space and in time.
