Life & Work with Tom Goss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Goss.

Hi Tom, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I wasn’t always an artist, in fact, quite the opposite. I grew up in Wisconsin as an athlete (gymnastics, soccer, wrestling) and went to college in Missouri on a wrestling scholarship. After years of fighting, I felt like something was missing. For me, that was spirituality. So after I graduated from college, I moved to Washington, DC to become a Catholic priest. That was short-lived, and 18 months later, I left the seminary. Honestly, at that point in my life, I had little left that I felt joy in so I focused on what did give me joy, my guitar and songwriting. So I decided to make a record. I started pooling all of my energy and money into making that happen. That’s how my career as an artist started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Making art is hard. Finding an audience is even harder. I’m lucky to have a very strong work ethic and to have met many amazing collaborators along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a musician, storyteller, and songwriter. I strive to tell stories from my queer community, as well as that of the underdog. I feel grateful to have been able to do that for so long.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I have a huge collection of stuffed animals. My husband and I consider them our children. They have names, voices, and personalities. They even have signatures (and signed our wedding certificate).
