Meet Brandon Souza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Souza.

Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I got started when my friend in middle school asked me to audition for the middle school play. Fast forward a few months and there I am on closing night, looking out at the audience and I knew two things to be true. One, I am not singing this song well. In fact, it’s quite bad. And I have to do this for the rest of my life. Then years of plays and classes and a degree in acting from the University of Northern Colorado I’m here. I’m living in the valley and doing my best every day to keep the dream alive. I’ve shot commercials and independent films. I’ve been taking acting classes and improv classes and working on building a strong foundation for my career so it has room to grow and strength to last. There have been many lessons along the way about being a person and being an artist outside of the safety of college.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes and no. But that’s life. I’ve been lucky to have a strong group of friends, all alumni from my college, who lived out in California already. Having them here has been a game-changer. There’s lots of falling along the way to achieving your dreams. Mine have been, like many people, depression, money and more of the problems of the working class in modern America. How do you keep the dream alive when you can barely afford your rent? You get creative. I try to follow the fun in every day, but sometimes I just can’t. Sometimes I’m just 50% of who I know I can be. As long as each and every day I wake up and try to be better, just a little, every day and that makes a world of difference.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actor/writer/comedian, like everyone else nowadays you can’t just have the one, the backslashes are important. I love comedy, I have been active in the groundlings programs and shooting funny commercials. There’s one from Sofi where I “make out” with a pane of glass that is funny. . I am quite proud of that commercial because in my young years as an actor in L.A. that has been the commercial that people are recognizing me for. People from high school and old friends I haven’t chatted with in years have been reaching out saying they’ve seen it. That is something fantastic to have in my blossoming my career and helps motivate me to keep moving forward. What sets me apart is my character work. In that Sofi commercial, my comedic abilities made me more a lead in that commercial I wasn’t supposed to be, but my comedic senses were brought to the limelight! And who doesn’t love getting a little extra attention.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My sister is a few years younger than me and my parents got divorced when we were young so we had each other. I know this is starting to sound sad, well good, I’m glad because then the part that’s not sad holds more weight. We would spend countless hours together building various forts in the basement. I was responsible for the architecture and making sure that there were no holes and that we had a structure that we could move around in. My sister, Kaitlyn, was responsible for the interior design with all the extra blankets, pillows, and lights and everything. Then we would watch a show or movie and have an awesome time together. My favorite type of fort we would build is what we called a garbage fort where we just threw everything in a pile and then made something out of it. What a nice lesson to remember. Throw everything together and see what beauty you can find within.
