Conversations with Frank McShan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank McShan.

Hi Frank, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got my first iPod for Christmas when I was eight years old. Ever since then, I have been super passionate about technology. By the time I was in high school, I had an entire collection of iPhones in my room. I soon discovered that I also have an innate passion for sharing knowledge with others, as I found myself often helping others out with their devices.

My journey as a content creator began in late 2019 when one of my best friends had a viral video on TikTok. After seeing the success of that video, I decided to try creating videos focused on tech. I never thought anything would come of it, but I decided to give it a shot. After about a month of posting, I had one video get nearly 3 million views in just a day, which motivated me to continue posting consistently. A few months later, I had close to 100,000 followers. Around this time, I realized I could take my passion for learning and tech to the next level with social media.

Over the past two years, I have focused on staying true to myself by following my passions and creating videos about tech. I now have nearly 2.5 million followers across all platforms, and content creation has led to many incredible opportunities in my life, including, most recently, interviewing Apple CEO Tim Cook.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey as a content creator has been filled with several challenges. When I was just getting started, I was uncomfortable with having my voice or face on camera, as I was nervous about what others would think of me. It was also a struggle to find a content format that worked on TikTok. After a few months of experimenting, I began my “iPhone Hacks” series, where I’ll give viewers a short tutorial on how to get the most out of their phones. Seeing how well some of these videos performed made me more comfortable creating content with my voice. Now, just about every new video I upload will have me in it.

Another struggle with creating content full-time has been balancing all the work that comes with being a content creator while also being a full-time college student. As a Computer Science major also minoring in Chinese Studies, I often was inundated with homework, and it occasionally became difficult over the past three years to balance the two. I just finished my college career on December 16th and am super excited to now be doing content creation full-time.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a full-time technology content creator with a mission of making the most important device you own–your phone–more useful and accessible. I am known for my knowledge of Apple and its various products. My “iPhone Hacks” and “iOS Updates” series are among my most popular and have been viewed hundreds of millions of times.

I am most proud of the things I’ve been able to accomplish before even graduating college. My biggest dream growing up was to have the opportunity to go to Apple Park for an Apple Event where the company releases its newest products. I also had always looked up to Apple CEO Tim Cook and dreamt of what it would be like to meet him. Everything became surreal when I was invited to Apple Park in September for the launch of the iPhone 14 series. That day was one of the highlights of my career, as I was living the dream I once had and also got to meet some of the tech creators I had watched all of the time growing up. Additionally, I had the incredible opportunity to interview Apple CEO Tim Cook in November, which was truly a dream come true.

What matters most to you? Why?
There are a few things that matter to me in my life. First, I have always been motivated and driven to achieve my dreams. Building up my platforms has allowed me to accomplish much of what I had envisioned as a teenager, and it still blows my mind that all of this is real. I also value personal relationships with those close to me, such as my friends and family. I enjoy surrounding myself with others who are like me. Finally, being the best person I can be matters incredibly to me. I try to be the best version of myself each day and consistently see what I can do to help others.
