Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah True.
Hi Hannah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2012, I joined an organization called The Volunteer Clowns of Orange County. I learned to twist balloons so I could volunteer at different charity events as a clown through this organization. I’d always get asked for a business card, but was reluctant to start a business, especially since I was still a student.
After 6 years of volunteer balloon twisting, I started my business, Bonkerz 4 Balloons. May 2023 will be the 5th anniversary. It’s crazy to think I’ve been a balloon artist for almost 11 years. Time flies when you’re having fun!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Like all businesses, there are ups and downs. I’m very fortunate the recent pandemic helped my business. It actually catapulted Bonkerz in sooo many ways. In December 2020, I was able to buy a cargo van to make transporting balloons much easier. I was (and still am) pretty proud of myself for being a then 22 year old purchasing a new business vehicle. To be honest, I don’t know if I would have been able to buy a van only 2.5 years in business had it not been for COVID.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for my attention to detail and simplicity when it comes to my designs. I like everything to be super clean and simple but also cute and impactful.
I recently volunteered at something called “The Big Balloon Build” which is an organization that partners with local charities and balloon artists around the world. The goal is to raise money for these charities by creating a wonderland made of balloons. For the last build in December in Kansas City, I was selected to be the detail lead for my team and also helped make some characters. Hasbro was kind enough to let us make their characters out of balloons!
I’ve also been asked to be a specialist at the next Big Balloon Build in Lake Geneva, WI in March. I’m really excited to experience the build again and watch as we carpet the room with balloons over a few short days. As a specialist, I’m expected to use my balloon-twisting skills as well as my attention to detail to bring the designs from paper to reality.
To answer your question, this is what I’m most proud of; putting my passion and talents to work to make the world a better place. This is what first piqued my interest in balloons and it’s what drives me to keep doing what I do. 🙂
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Honestly, the biggest lesson is to appreciate the little things. During the pandemic, we were going bonkerz delivering balloons to help everyone celebrate occasions. Even during a pandemic, we still have birthdays and graduations. Life doesn’t stop and it’s important to celebrate accomplishments and milestones when you can.
