Life & Work with Angie Campbell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Campbell.

Angie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always dreamed of being an actor and growing up, I went to theater camp and participated in school plays. I did ballet and tap for seven years, and I loved performing. My parents didn’t think a job as an actor was practical, so they discouraged me from following that dream. I wound up studying psychology in college and even went on to get my master’s in clinical psychology.

When I was in grad school, however, I would still dream about being an actor, and one day I wondered “Why not? Why not try it? If I don’t pursue it now, I’ll always wonder.” I was in my hometown of Milwaukee at the time, so I started auditioning for student films and local commercials. I was lucky enough to make some great relationships with some really talented filmmakers in the area who put me in multiple projects of theirs. I got an agent and eventually moved to Chicago where I studied at iO Chicago. It was there I got my first co-star roles on Chicago Fire and Work in Progress.

After the pandemic, I decided to really commit to acting and move to Los Angeles. The day after I moved to LA, I found out I booked a role in an upcoming film with Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor! The film shot in Richmond, VA, and working on that set was a dream come true. I couldn’t believe it was me, little Angie Campbell from middle-of-nowhere-Wisconsin, was standing next to film legends Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor, and that the camera was on all three of us!

In addition to auditioning, I’m currently working on a few of my own projects. My writing partner and I are working on a script that’s heavily inspired by my mom’s life, and my OTHER writing partner and I are working on a script based on my time working as a therapist for children with special needs.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been the smoothest of roads! I’ve wanted to give up many times. When they say you face a lot of rejection in this industry, they’re not lying. I’ve turned down so many good jobs and career opportunities to keep pursuing acting. At this point in my life, a lot of my friends are buying houses and having kids. I don’t necessarily want that for myself, but even if I did, that wouldn’t be financially possible. I know my parents would love nothing more than for me to give it all up and move home, but I know that wouldn’t make me happy. In this job, you have to constantly deal with people asking you “So what are you working on?” or “Where can I watch your movie?” when the reality is, sometimes it’s a huge win to just get an audition that week! Being an actor can feel isolating because people outside the industry don’t really get it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love comedy. It’s always been my go to. Whenever something bad–or good!–happens to me in life, I tend to make a joke about it. To me, I think comedy is a form of therapy. If you can learn to laugh at something painful that happened to you, it no longer has as strong of a power on you. I’ve always looked to comedy for comfort, and I’d love to be able to create something like that for other people: where, no matter what they’re going through, they can laugh and forget about their problems.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
