Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Gordon.
Hi Stephen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Stephen “Swanky” Gordon. I am a Producer, Engineer, DJ, and Songwriter from Brooklyn, NY. From a young age I was naturally gifted in music, I taught myself drums at an early age and was classically trained in piano starting from the age of 5. Throughout my childhood, I was always involved in music in some shape or form. Music affected everything I did, the colors and the textures meant everything to me. So, from a young age, I made it my life’s mission to provide music the relief that it did for me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every day is tough. When committing to an unconventional craft, there’s no real road map to being a musician. It’s one of the few careers that doesn’t have one. Doctors go to med school, Lawyers go to law school if you want to be trucker you get your license. In music, you just figure it out, and it’s all different. You can have a hit single for the first song you ever recorded, you can also work for 20 years and never make it a hit. In that type of industry, there is no smooth road.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So currently, I am a Producer, Songwriter, Engineer, and DJ. A lot of times in those types of positions people hold their hat on a skill. A producer maybe would say that their best quality is music theory, or a DJ would say that their scratching is the best in the world. Although those things are important, I pride myself in my empathy. I can put myself in someone’s shoes and understand the exact product they want to create or hear.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I have synesthesia, so when music is playing, I see colors. So, when I’m DJ’ing or producing, I actually match the colors I see with the different instruments or tracks.
