Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Horton.
Hi Erica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I began my career in 2003, between my Junior and Senior years of college. At the time I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree in business and was looking for internships in the Los Angeles area. Like most people at the time, I had no direct experience with the fertility world, but I was immediately intrigued when I discovered an internship listing titled “marketing intern needed for a gay surrogacy agency.” As a queer woman and someone with a gay father, I already had a connection to LGBTQ+ people and families. I had a general idea of what surrogacy was but had never heard of surrogacy for LGBTQ+ people.
I knew I had to be a part of what Growing Generations was doing. I applied for the internship, was hired, and spent that summer building our egg donor program. After the summer, I returned to Washington to finish school and finally moved to Los Angeles permanently in the summer of 2004. I had a great offer from one of the big car manufacturers in their market research division-but Growing Generations called. They wanted me to join them permanently. I hesitated, the offer I had was so attractive-great money, a big stable company, good benefits-everything a college grad could ask for. But I loved my time at Growing Generations- the people were wonderful, and the work was meaningful. I knew that opportunities this serendipitous were rare, so I went with my heart. Growing Generations was where I wanted to be.
My role in the company has expanded significantly over the years, and now—as President and Partner—I oversee all departments that manage care for intended parents, surrogates, and donors. I am proud to have been part of establishing Growing Generations as one of the most experienced and reputable surrogacy and egg donor agencies in the world. I believe Growing Generations’ early mission of working with the underserved LGBTQ+ community required us to break barriers and forge paths where none existed before and that still is one of our core strengths today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it’s been a remarkably smooth road. Like any business, we’ve experienced challenges over the years but I have fantastic business partners and a wonderful staff.
Our industry is growing quickly – an environment that lends itself to frequent change and change can sometimes be tiring. Whenever I feel the fatigue of change I remind myself that it’s just the human condition-when we’re still we want to be moving and when we’re moving we want to be still.
As you know, we’re big fans of Growing Generations. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Growing Generations is a world-renowned surrogacy and egg donor agency. We’re known for being one of the most experienced and high-quality agencies in the world.
Growing Generations prides itself on a safe, high-quality, and highly customized experience for our clients. I’m most proud of our depth and breadth of experience that allows us to guide clients through a complex process while meeting their unique needs.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories are summers spent with my grandparents on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, MI, and Jacksonville, FL.
There was and still is something magical about the more rural parts of the Pacific Northwest. I would go fishing, crabbing, hiking, and camping. It taught me the value of having diverse life experiences.
