Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Evans.
Hi Lauren, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been on stage since age 5 and have been formally training as an Actor since age 8. Even now, when I am coaching another Actor, or being paid to be in a film/tv show/play, I’m still training myself and learning. It never stops. The moment always has something new to teach–if you are IN it. I was born in Toronto and worked in almost every major Canadian city on either stage or screen. Even Manitoba…in their terrifyingly cold winter. I moved to LA during the WGA strike of 2007–what a humbling intro to Hollywood that was–and I have gratefully been here ever since. I have two lead roles shooting this month in Independent Films; Clark Moses III’s post-apocalyptic ‘The Other Side’ and an avant-garde drama called ‘Loss’ from Filmmaker Walter Moises. Very excited to be a part of both.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Have things gone smoothly for me? HA! I mean… what constitutes smoothness, really? Has it gone according to my plans and desires? Not often has it gone according to my plan, but the detours I have had both personally and professionally have been undeniably fulfilling. I’m very grateful for not getting some things I thought I should have in this business. I feel like the big things are still in process and to take score this soon would be a detrimental thing to do. Many Actors whom I deeply respect and admire are doing their best work in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. I expect that of myself, too. Sometimes I think, the harder the life, the smoother the person…if they learn their life lessons, so I’d rather be smooth as a person than have a feathered nest. I’d rather be able to fly, to continue the metaphor.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Although I am a classically trained Actor, (I graduated from George Brown Theatre School in Toronto) I have also found myself creating very abstract film work; exploring both sides of the camera. I hope to eventually be known for my film/tv work here in the U.S. There are pieces of my life puzzle moving around to create that potentiality. I am equally proud of the two series which I created for various digital spaces like IG, Twitter, and YouTube; #TheBreathingRoom and Waiting for Godot. They are both viewable on my IG @yeslaurenevans
When answering what I specialize in, as an Actor, my instinct is to say, ‘oh anything’! But I think the truth is that I specialize in characters who are put in very high-intensity crises, requiring the full spectrum of human vulnerability. I am comfortable being uncomfortable, in service to the story. I enjoy it because I am naturally a pretty grounded and low-key individual and characters like that are such a departure from my everyday self.
What sets you apart from others, you ask? Whoa. Ummm. I wish someone else could answer for me. I think what tells me apart from others in both the fiction and non-fiction work I do is my willingness to be fiercely vulnerable in situations that may not paint me in a pretty, beautiful, or even favorable light. I love putting my attention on the truth of a situation; whether it be sitting with one of my beloved guests on #TheBreathingRoom, hanging out in a possibly dismal, existential frame on ‘Waiting for Godot’ or railing on fake coke in an Indie Film. Whatever the truth is, I wanna tell it. hear it, be it. That’s what makes me tick. Even though Acting is creating an imaginary circumstance, if your truth telling ability is not the faculty guiding you through it, the audience knows and feels duped. No one likes liars. Especially not I.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Kyle Zanika of @sszfilms has been a wonderful supporter of my Acting career and even pushed me to start coaching other Actors. I am very grateful for his brilliant mind and incredibly generous Artistic spirit. I’ve been cast in a few of his projects which will shoot in 2023. I am also very grateful for Sandra Leviton of Under The Stairs Entertainment–a powerful Writer-Director-Producer who never hesitates to champion women in film. She has certainly helped me and has a huge 2023 ahead of her.
