Check Out Patrick Dean’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Dean.

Hi Patrick, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started playing guitar around the age of 13 but really fell in love when I went to high school and started playing in blues bands with my mentor and teacher. After high school, I continued playing private events and bars until deciding on moving to LA to attend music school and pursue a career in music. Since moving to LA I have had the pleasure of playing all across the United States and Canada, producing content for guitar and music-related brand, and providing private lessons to others through my social media pages.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Fortunately, I have always had the support of my parents in my decision to make music my career. One challenge I have faced with growing up with dyslexia which made it hard to read musical notation. Early on it was impressed upon me the importance of ear training and learning to pick out songs by listening which made not being able to read music more manageable.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a freelance musician and content producer. Basically, brands will reach out to me to collaborate on advertisements and content for their social media. I feel like a huge part of my success has come from my personality and the way it comes across in my videos. The way I market my videos to be inclusive, engaging, and educational is also vital to my success. I also work with various producers to make music for TV and advertisements. This part of my work brings me out of my comfort zone and forces me to make critical decisions based on what is needed rather than what I might want for my own personal taste.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
You need to create a personal connection with brands and the artist relations network for the companies you want to work with. This is the best way to get called back for work. There are a lot of musicians in the world but it’s rare to find people who you can hang out with and have real connections with. The “Hang” is crucial!
