Community Highlights: Meet Austin Arrington of PLANT Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Arrington. He share his story with us below:

Austin Arrington is a software developer, environmental scientist, and artist.

Austin founded PLANT Group (People Learning About Nature Together), an ecological design and engineering firm connecting humans and nature to enable climate adaptation and mitigation work.

PLANT Group is currently building climate-tech software for clients like the Ecosystem Services Market Consortium (ESMC). Recent projects include an app for monitoring biodiversity and a software platform to support the carbon market and scale regenerative agriculture. Prior to this, Austin worked as a Software Engineer with soil sensor startup Teralytic.

Austin holds an MS in Environmental Science from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a MA in Bioethics from NYU.

Austin uses music and art to explore themes of nature, technology, and spirituality.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
PLANT Group was founded in 2016, and the path to finding our niche was winding and full of surprises! While we started with on-the-ground design-build projects, COViD seriously impacted our growth. This forces us to innovate and pivot towards environmental software, which has led to a whole new set of opportunities and helped us continue to grow as a business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
PLANT Group (People Learning About Nature Together) is an ecological design and engineering firm connecting humans and nature to enable climate adaptation and mitigation work.

Our services include software development, product management, project management, geographic information systems (GIS), research, and green design-build.

We have worked on a range of projects focused on climate adaptation and mitigation, including green roofs, regenerative farms, urban green spaces, sensors, and environmental monitoring software.

What distinguishes us is our interdisciplinary team (containing artists, engineers, and ecologists), and our ability to infuse expertise around environmental-social impact into technology.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Austin uses art and music as a vehicle to further promote PLANT Group’s mission of environmental and social awareness. His latest album Let It Ride is streaming on all platforms.
