Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Fair and Ryan Held.
Kelsey and Ryan’s route to landscape design was a rather circuitous one. Together they worked as photographers and team coordinators for rock climbing companies throughout the South West. After traveling for over two years, living out of a Sprinter Van and experiencing some of the wildest landscapes, they were ready settle down and moved back to Los Angeles. In LA, they each developed their own artwork.
Ryan began a series of abstract enamel and acrylic paintings while Kelsey studied drafting, acrylic painting and welding at Otis College of Art and Design. Soon their interests shifted to their own landscapes and those of their closest friends. “I’ve always though three dimensionally,” says Kelsey, “so when the opportunity to develop hardscapes and gardens came in the form of a friend needing a designer, we jumped at the chance.” Now, we develop comprehensive 3D models of new landscapes and are beginning to venture into interiors. “Since Ryan and I lived outside for three years, we’ve always felt more comfortable developing the land, but now that indoor-outdoor living is so essential to enjoying our beautiful weather we have naturally found ourselves considering the home as a whole.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Certainly, every artist struggles to find their own style and I think that is something I struggled with in my painting and welding. In fine art, there is always a push to do something no one has ever seen before, be innovative and new. For me, everything felt like an adoration of my favorite painters and sculptors instead of my own work.
Landscaping and hardscape design just made more sense to me. I began tailoring spaces to the client, discovering who they were and creating deeply personal projects. The whole process was much more comprehensive and dynamic for me.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with K. Fair Landscape Design – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
K. Fair Landscapes is an energetic husband and wife team that seeks to make living outdoors easy, inviting and functional. We specialize in hardscapes, pools and easy care gardens and work closely with craftsman to make truly unique spaces for the families in the South Bay.
Exploring our clients’ lifestyle is key to ensuring they get the most use from their outdoor space. We begin the design process with an in-depth discovery of the site as well as the clients wants and needs. Multiple iterations of the project are presented and discussed in the early stages of design. We also present a variety of style boards and inspirational images to fit the client’s unique lifestyle and tastes. Furthermore, we have an incredible team of craftsman who we work closely with during the building process ensuring each project is deeply personal and unique.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The most existing addition to our business is our growing team of craftsman that we work closely with. We began designing outdoor furniture with the help of innovative thinkers who can take our designs and make them a reality. “I have this thing with making objects look like they are floating,” says Kelsey “and now we have the man power and minds to help make some of our greatest designs a reality.”
