Meet Shiloh Johnson of ComplYant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shiloh Johnson.

Hi Shiloh, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Shiloh Johnson I am a licensed CPA in the state of California, I have an undergrad degree in accounting and graduate degree in taxation. I have been working in corporate tax accounting for 15 years. And in that time, managed the complexities for business tax for large corporations such as Technicolor and Aramark. At the end of that tenure, I ran my own tax accounting firm and found that all of the small businesses that were engaging my services had major tax issues. I kept asking them all how did they learn about tax and why where they so behind.

Everyone basically said you don’t know what you don’t know so I made it my mission to create a product to arm small businesses with what they don’t know. I was then able to productize the entire tax research process for a small business, helping them understand what tax they do need to pay to what tax authorities, helping them budget for the amounts they need to pay, and providing daily and weekly savings goals so there is money to actually pay the bills when they are due.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not as smooth as I might have hoped. Lots of struggles along the way. We are a venture-backed company so we have had to raise money along our journey and the fundraise process is rough. I am a minority woman so getting investors to believe in my dream (when it isn’t all the way finished) enough to back me was a major struggle. Also, understanding how your customer will interact with your tool, which often can be very different then what you believe to be true about your true customer. That journey hasn’t been smooth either.

We also give away a lot of free content via our resource hub, we think arming the business owner with education around business operations is huge for the longevity and success of the business owner.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
That no one is really in opposition to my success other than me. If I can make a regular practice out of getting out of my own way then life can be limitless.
