Rising Stars: Meet Jessica Murillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Murillo.

Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Jessica Fe Murillo, but you can call me Jess! I am a photographer located in Southern California. My passion is capturing our adventures in life and sharing them in different ways through the beauty of photography – I want to inspire everyone in the world to see that everything we experience in life can turn out to be something that is “Actually Pretty Good!”

My journey in photography started in 2012 when my friends gifted me a camera for my birthday. Back then, I used Lucky, my Pomeranian-Maltese mix, as my main model to practice on. I quickly learned how to play with lighting and composition, which eventually helped me see the world in different perspectives.

Fast forward to today—one of my main subjects is Katsu, my Pembroke Welsh Corgi! Some people also know me as @_katsu.the.corgi ‘s CorgMom. I recently joined Mark Lee’s team of dog trainers at @EasyDayK9Academy. My goal in life is to do something I love which also gives back to the community. What better way than to work with dogs and their owners! With EasyDay K9 Academy, I will be helping dogs learn how to live successfully in the human world while helping their owners understand, bond, & build relationships with their dogs through trust & communication (@Jess_EasyDayK9Academy). Being able to capture their journey along the way is a plus – making my journey in photography come full circle and back to where it all started – dogs!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! There have been plenty of times where I did not think I was cut out to be a professional photographer and I would question whether or not people liked and respected my work. I’ve learned that you need to surround yourself with people who challenge you to make a difference in other people’s lives, to keep growing, to be humble in success, and to pursue what matters to you and overcome whatever obstacles that may come your way. I have also learned that you have to trust that being uncomfortable will get you to where you need to be, which will open up doors for opportunities and growth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My portfolio is diverse and includes (but not limited to) family portraits, engagements, weddings, food, brands and dog photography. What really sets my work apart is my ability to capture moments in life’s adventures which allow people to go back into time to remember that specific moment while also telling their story.
