Hi Aziza, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Suriname, an ethnically diverse country with a Caribbean mother & Middle Eastern father, I knew there had to be more to the beauty standards I was seeing in the mainstream media. I started experimenting with different products & ingredients to create my own hair ‘potions’ at the age of 12. As I got older, I noticed my hair texture changing again so I started to experiment with different ingredients to reach my desired results. My ‘potions’ worked so well friends & family eventually started asking for their own. After my own personal hair journey, I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of natural hair care brands aren’t as inclusive as they should be. Textured hair is not tied to sexuality, race, nationality or skin color. Everyone’s hair care journey is different, but oddly enough, also the same. The Potion Studio is for everyone, but most definitely for all of us who are still on our natural hair, self-care journey. I also pride myself on creating products that are clean and multifunctional.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes and no; it feels smooth in the sense of how passionate I am about beauty and hair and how happy it makes me to see others happy. But in actuality, I have a couple of bumps in the road. I’ve only moved to the United States about two years ago and launched The Potion Studio a year ago. It’s been tough figuring out the basics, the norms and the overall culture within the beauty industry, especially as an independent business owner.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’m definitely an advocate for taking risks with everything in life. I moved to LA during the height of COVID to prove to myself I would be able to survive in such a fast-paced city. With a lot of hard work and determination, I did! Something changes within you when you’re uncomfortable, and that’s when the real growth happens.
