Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamari Love.
Kamari, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m originally from New Orleans, LA and grew up predominately in Dallas, Tx. Performing in all capacities has always been a passion of mine, and I’ve been sure to implement that in various ways throughout my life. As an actress, athlete, model and singer, I certainly never took time off! Leading up to my relocation to Los Angeles, I performed in theatre, competitive dance, girl’s ensembles & worship teams; alongside competing in volleyball, basketball, softball and track before continuing on to playing four years of college softball on a DII scholarship. Post college, I noticed a pull towards modeling by way of photographers and brands reaching out to work together. Although this wasn’t my initial reason for coming to LA, I knew to continue a career in performance, LA is where I needed to be. Upon my arrival, I took on a job in staffing in DTLA to sustain myself while figuring out my path here. And within eight months, the pull into modeling and commercial acting had become too strong to ignore. I quit my job going totally freelance and thus began my dive into a working career! It’s been six years since my move and I’ve now acquired nine agencies across seven cities in two countries between acting and modeling. My bookings have me on a plane literally every week & I’ve obtained a lifestyle I’ve always desired.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has certainly not been smooth sailing the whole way. Throughout my journey, I’ve battled massive financial setbacks, self-doubt, depression, relocation, anxiety, and loneliness to name a few. The type of journey I’m on required these trials though. My purpose on this journey is to illuminate others and to help lift them up from the deepest, darkest places. It’s to show others how the shadowy, dark parts of themselves actually contribute to their light too. In order to be able to connect to and reach these people, I have to be able to relate to them. So I understood early on that I too, must endure many difficult battles on my own journey; and that became my strength.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently, for work my days revolve around acting and modeling opportunities. I’ve been in LA for six years now and have amassed over 30 TV appearances between commercial, tv, and film; alongside just as many campaigns for print & editorial work. However, my work is simply an output of the platform I am utilizing for a much greater cause. I plan to continue to use these platforms in order to relay potent messages to the collective in as many ways as possible. My goal is to heal, to illuminate, to relieve suffering and to enhance perspective; & to do this as wide, far and fast as necessary. My work in TV/Film and modeling allows me to do this through different characters, personalities, stories, etc. Down the line, I plan to integrate my degrees in Sports Psychology & Clinical Mental Health Counseling with these platforms to specifically target the industry and refine the ways we cater to the mental health of those who perform on a constant basis for others, with no way of being able to show up for themselves.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe risk-taking is one of the most, if not THE most important parts of being successful. It’s not something you can avoid in fact. I have made risk-taking a hobby. I believe that in order to know what you’re truly capable of and what you’re meant to accomplish, you have to bet on yourself over and over again, regardless of how crazy the leap of faith may look. Some of my risks looked like relocating by myself to LA, NY and Miami at different points to lay the groundwork for my career. Choosing to take on under-compensated work early on when I had no money to pay bills, just trusting that the exposure really would get me there. Signing away a percentage of my income to agencies, trusting they do have my best interest at heart. It goes on and on; risk-taking will always be inevitable in the equation to success.
