Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawsvn.
Lawsvn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Cleveland, I’ve been involved in music since being in the church choir as a little girl, The beginning of my love of music truly started however with musical theater. In the 5th grade, I was selected to be in the high school production of Fiddler on the Roof and kept on with it till I graduated high school. I even majored in musical theater in college but began to be doubtful that I’d ever get a career in the field, so I changed it to pre-med. I began writing music at the age of nine just for fun but began to take it as a profession once COVID started, with the loss of my grandmother I began to use writing as a way to cope. I will be releasing my debut EP “Emotionally Unavailable” on May 21st, the same day I’ll be graduating with my master’s from Morehouse School of Medicine. I chose this date because it is a day where I am leaving one chapter of my life and embarking on a new one which is scary but I hope my music can resonate with those who have chosen to choose themselves first and continue to learn how to love themselves rather stay in codependent/ toxic relationships. I hope to make music my lifelong career, I love writing and creating something relatable to like-minded individuals such as myself. I feel we all have wanted reassurance, validation, and love but rather seek it from others I’m learning to find those qualities within myself.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s definitely not a smooth journey, I don’t have a team yet, and working all by yourself means you are in charge of how everything is handled. It’s costly, it’s mentally exhausting, and can feel discouraging but it’s very rewarding to see my music come to life. Working and connecting with talented people here in Atlanta has been rewarding, also having the influence of those I admire back home in Cleveland keeps me going. I know if I work hard enough, keep a positive mindset and continue to be myself it will pay off. I don’t strive for fame, I just want my music to be heard. I want girls that look like me, who don’t fit society’s standards to be given a chance and we will if I have anything to do with it. The music industry has its highs and lows my goal in it is just to bring good music to people and have my music live on for years to come.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer/songwriter. I am most proud of completing my first EP “Emotionally Unavailable”, I would say I make RnB music but I am a very complex writer but would say my music is close to RnB. What sets me apart from others is that I want to make it my mission to bring a new yet old RnB sound back. I want to make sure I’m making music that resonates with black women and trans women. I write for the black queer girl that always felt alone, that was always picked on for her weight, skin color, and big lips. I grew to love my flaws which I find beautiful now. I do not plan to be the face or role model but yet someone that individuals can relate to and when they hear my music can feel at home.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My grandmother who was the first person to bring music into my life while watching her sing at church, the black women in Cleveland I was raised watching every Sunday sing in church as an adolescent, my music teachers Mr. Glen Brackens and Mr. Craig McGaughey, my friends who I shared memories within the VMD all throughout middle and high school. My mom who waited long hours for me to get out of play rehearsals, was all engineers I’ve worked with and was patient and kind to me.
