Today we’d like to introduce you to Diamond Ward.
Hi Diamond, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am a Detroit, Michigan native. I moved to Los Angeles during my last semester of completing my second bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University.
As a first-generation college student and someone that suffers from really bad winter blues, I decided that I needed a change and I needed to move from Michigan. Michigan will always be home and I love it dearly but my place just wasn’t there anymore.
Moving to California was challenging and intimidating, after driving approximately 2300 miles and over 32 hours I determined I had no choice but to make it in California. I experienced my account being wiped out, hostile roommates, and at one point and time lived out of motels while I was in between housing.
All of the things that I have been through molded me into where I am today. Now four years later, I have started my own cosmetic line (Thediamondw) as well as my journey as a makeup artist. I have done birthday photoshoots, and films for the American film institute and recently worked on the Alexander wang fashion show.
I have accomplished this while also completing a Masters of Public Health Degree, and Masters of Molecular Medicine and now am currently enrolled in law school at Purdue. With everything this had prompted my brand Makeup, Medical, and Law which encompasses all that I am and all that I do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road. California overall is hard. Adulthood is hard in general. I have come to understand life is just filled with bumps it’s just all about how you get over them. There is this whole big thing about breaking generational curses but we don’t talk about the trauma that comes with it.
Outside of life obstacles, my eternal battle was greater. I had the worst identity crisis which left me feeling anxious all the time., depressed, etc. When breaking generational curses it’s a lot of pressure but not only that you quickly learn that you don’t have the skills to do so putting you in a sense at a disadvantage with your own goals and this is frustrating.
I had to do a lot of self-evaluating, meditating, and journaling. This allowed a few things, one for me to transition from being narrow-minded to more open-minded, lean my true self, be open to the space I am to allow growth, and how handle things with grace.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently a clinical research coordinator at a cancer research center/ hospital.
My job involves patient coordinating, consenting, management of patient records, and data entry/management of clinical data. The data that is maintained is reviewed by the FDA before a treatment can be marketed to patients.
I am also currently completing my JD at Purdue University Global-Concord Law School. I am specializing in medical law. With my law degree, I plan to fight but better policies and procedures to ensure a way for a better quality of life for Americans.
I am also a cosmetic line owner and makeup artist. I truly enjoy the art and creativity that is expressed through each makeup look. Beauty is my escape from everything. Makeup has allowed me to deal with a lot of troubling moments in my life.
For my love of makeup and to make sure that I was providing excellent creative service, I went to Vizio makeup Academy to strengthen my skills.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The people! LA is a beautiful place! I love how just about everyone that I have encountered has a story to tell each different and unique.
LA pushes you to want to achieve and go hard for your endeavors. The energy that LA gives off is one of a kind. Through my journey here I have met strangers that became supportive and my friend.
I love the beach life here, walking through the sand and having the water right in front of you is grounding and relaxing. When I need to realign and find peace, I go to the beach.
