Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Triolo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got into fitness while I was growing up in New Jersey. The harsh winters that we have back there make it ideal for hanging out in the gym. Being as how I was always one of the smallest guys on any of the teams I’d play for, I took it upon myself to start weight training at the age of 15. Right off the bat, I knew I had a knack for it. By the time I got to college, I knew that strength training was going to be something that would always be a part of my life. I moved from New Jersey to Miami right out of college, and began working at a small gym in South Beach. This was where I was introduced to actual business side of things. I came to the realization that not only could I make a great living working as a personal trainer, but I could also allow myself the freedom to create my own schedule. To a young kid living in one of the most beautiful areas in the country, this was amazing! After 2 years in Miami, I decided to move to Santa Monica, Ca. Once again, I thrust myself into the fitness industry in LA. I worked at Crunch Fitness on Sunset and Laurel for a couple of years, then went over to Gold’s Gym in Redondo Beach after that. Usually on weekends, my GF and I would go visit her family in Huntington Harbor. I always loved Huntington Beach for some reason.
Every weekend, I would see this small, mom and pop gym on Main St. in HB. After about 2 years of seeing it, I decided to pop in. For some reason, it just felt like home. It was owned by a husband and wife, and they really made me feel like I was a part of the family from day 1. This began my transition from LA to OC. I packed up and moved to OC and began working at this gym. After about 1 year, I made the conscious decision to open my own facility. This was easier said than done however! It took me another 5 years before I would open my own facility.
I really wanted to do things on my own, without the help of anyone. I was able to save the money necessary to open up shop, and on July 9th, 2012, Impact Fitness opened its doors. After 2 years of being in business, I had to move to another building which was more than double the size of the original. I love each and every client that walks through the door as if they were my own family. I think that is a big part of the gym’s success. Even though the training sessions are semi-private, I think the clients feel as if they are getting individual attention, and that’s huge.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No. Not at all. Money problems, lawsuits, buildout disasters, etc. You name it, it’s pretty much happened to me over the last 5 years!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a strength and conditioning facility. We are not a CrossFit, nor are we like an Orange Theory. We focus primarily on 1 thing…getting the individual as strong and as lean as possible. We do this not only by the training, but also by diets.
What sets us apart from the others is that we do not follow trends. We know what works and we stick to that day in and day out. Find me 1 trend that has stood the test of time! The only 1 I can think of is good old-fashioned weight training.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very outgoing, played a lot of sports, etc.
