Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’Shawn Taylor.
Hi Ja’Shawn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I go by Jaayy and I’ve been rapping for about eight years total and taking my craft seriously for about five years. I’m in a rap collective called “Nvstyvision”; we aren’t a group necessarily but we each are individual artists. My mom listened to R&B all the time and my grandpa listened to Jazz and that’s when I fell in love with music. There’s a long range of artists that I listen to and feel inspired from but personally I don’t feel like I sound like anyone. My music is very unique and versatile.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all has it been a smooth road, I personally feel like every artist goes through something but me personally, I’ve lost a lot of people close to me, ran into a lot of hardships and even been broke on my ass and couldn’t pay for the studio. When I was 16, I lost my grandpa who was a big influence on who I am today and also when I was 17, I lost my mom who was literally my best friend. It was tough as hell to get through but I’ve learned to cope with it over the years and get through the pain I felt. The hardships I went through weren’t easy either, I dealt with depression and it was really hard for me to overcome at a point in time. I also went through a series of failed relationships but overall, I managed to overcome everything that made me sad at a point of time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I rap, but I don’t like to consider myself strictly a rapper. I consider myself an Artist because I am versatile and make all kinds of music. I also have a brand that I’ve been working on behind the scenes called “Da Great” Clothing; I’ve been working on things here and there but just looking to perfect my samples before I drop anything. I feel like I’m most known for my music, I’m still working trying to get my name out there but just know I’m probably the most talented artist coming out of South Los Angeles. What sets me apart? I’m humble and I show love to my people who at the same level with me, not just the ones who already made it.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m not afraid to take risks, but what I do feel like is that you should only take risk that are beneficial. I’ve taken a lot of risks in my life, trying to make money, spending money multiple times. I’ve even taken risks with my music trying different sounds, trying different melodies, different types of beats, etc. I don’t mind taking risks; I just feel like it’s better to thoroughly think it out before things get bad; I’ve taken dumb risks before but that’s a part of the game, you gotta bounce back and keep going hard.
