Today we’d like to introduce you to Ladders.
Hi Ladders, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born and brought in Mumbai, India, Ladders has been exposed to a variety of cultures and musical styles. Has been a student at Musicians’ Institute, Berklee College of Music, and True School of Music. She started her musical training in Hindustani Classical and now is a songwriter and a western vocalist.
Since my mom encouraged me to express myself from a tender age, I found that art was how I processed, channelized, and expressed my emotions. When I was eight, I started Hindustani classical vocal training and harmonium but switched to western vocals and theory and basic keyboard. At. 14, I dove into the world of music theory and I became addicted to understanding artists through their art. Not just artists but people and emotions. Be it Vivaldi, Bach, or Japanese music, I was hooked. I started writing poetry after a bad breakup (I know, cliche) when I was 17, but before that, I never thought could write. Soon, poetry turned into songs, and here we are.
At 18, I moved to Boston and was made aware of the vastness of the music scene. I was around brilliant musicians that honestly made me a little insecure but I kept at it. Due to unforeseen circumstances (Boston weather, haha) I had to leave Berklee and I joined Musicians’ Institute, Los. Angeles. Fell in love with the city, and here I am, post my graduation in Associate of Arts in Vocal Performance, starting to release music and looking to start playing live soon!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think the hardest part is the constant moving and the conflict of thought between wanting to be in the States. or back home in India. I took some time to get used to the new culture – being a vegetarian has been difficult too, but desperation led me to learn how to cook, haha. It’s been hard to find a place in this community and I’d say I’m still trying to understand where I fit in. I used to be pretty extroverted back home, but there is a personality switch every time I get on that plane. Out here, in Los Angeles, I have extreme social anxiety and it makes it hard to meet new people and I feel like I miss out on opportunities. That is something I struggle with, apart from missing family. I wouldn’t say it’s that bad, it gets better every day.
I feel something we all struggle with as artists is navigating or paving our way through the industry since there is no one set way to do things, everything is trial and error, and to financially support yourself making art can be hard.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Based in Los Angeles, California, Ladders is an artist/songwriter that could only be described as Billie Eilish meets Adele meets Radiohead. Her unique style is a blend of rich vocal tones, experimenting with Pop/RnB/Alt-z music. Her music projects the ideas of existentialism through abstract writing. I like to write about conflict, confusion, and the power of melancholy. I specialize in writing. I recently released my first single ‘IDWY’ with Anwoy and it talks about mixed signals in a relationship from a young woman’s perspective. There is also a music video that kinda brings out the elements of the song visually. I’m very proud of this release as I was very nervous about putting myself out there.
My music, words, and actions will be known for projecting a message of diversity, empowerment, existence, and the power of melancholy.
I’m not sure what sets me apart from others but I want to break societal and cultural norms and blur the lines between eastern and western cultures. I’m often asked what I like better – and the answer is a healthy mix of both is what sets me free.
