Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Thomas.
Hi Chloe, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been somewhat creative of all sorts for as long as I can remember. Hairstyling didn’t become a passion of mine until five years ago, after a long career as a Graphic Designer & Project Manager.
Although I worked hard and would work alongside the best, I felt like I was restricted from being able to create and sadly put me into a negative and depressing state. I can’t exactly what triggered my passion for hair. At the time, I loved going to the salon to get my hair done, but I never really got what I wanted or it was just out of my budget. I fell in love with how Guy Tang did hair and dreamed of always going to him but there was no way, so I watched his tutorials and did it myself and then friends started asking me to do their hair. That’s when I decided to take the plunge and quit my Graphic Design career to pursue hair.
After getting my license, I started assisting and taking clients at multiple salons. When Covid hit, I felt even more lost, I felt like a failure and wasn’t sure about what I just did, but it gave me the opportunity and the free time to discover what my next plan of action was. I eventually discovered Salon Benjamin which happened to be my dream salon.
What I love most about my company is how supportive Benjamin, his wife, and my coworkers are. Since then, I’ve been taking advanced classes and do certifications to grow my craft and offer a range of techniques to my clientele. I get to work alongside my boss and the color team to help expand my skill set.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think one of the biggest challenges I had to face was working with different people and not being sure I would fit in with already established people. I also had to work a million times harder to put myself out there, considering I’m an introvert with imposters syndrome. Naturally, I’m shy, but once I’m comfortable with people, I can give my whole life story.
I’ve made mistakes along the way, and I’ve definitely got my fair share of screaming and yelling. Lots of restless nights when it comes to dealing with new clients, past clients, whether or not they actually love their color, and I have to keep telling myself it’s not worth giving up.
I also tend to work seven days a week if I need to, it pays off at the end of the day. It shows that I love what I do. Money will reflect and follow. I definitely look at the growth I’ve made now from 5 years ago and it’s astonishingly different.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Creative Director and Hairstylist. My clients consider me their fairy godmother. My goal is to give people the hair that they’ve always dreamed of, I’ve been on both sides and I’ve definitely had horrible experiences.
I’m also known to do drastic transformations that take me anywhere from 6-8 hours. I love doing extensions, and consider foiling and freehand painting an art form. I love customizing different shades for clients that I know no one can mimic, which sets me apart from my peers. I think it’s the original artist in me. In my spare time, I practice the piano and I love to cook, and attempt latte art.
What matters most to you? Why?
I think what matters the most to me is the ability to change someone’s mood and make sure they leave happy. I think it’s really important to treat everyone the way you would like to be treated.
In the future when I become an educator, I want to inspire people to bring this type of mentality to the table when I educate up and coming hair stylists.
